After a lot of thought and reflection I have made the difficult decision to close the office permanently. I don't see any clear or near endpoint to the COVID difficulties. As many of you know I still work ER shifts and I don't feel right treating sick COVID patients in marginal PPE and then potentially exposing clinic patients. I hope at some point in the future to be able to give this a go again, hopefully with more resources like x-ray.

It's been a joy to work with so many of you and help you work past various injuries and difficulties. If you are an existing patient I can provide some limited assistance by telemedicine in the next weeks if need be. I am happy to forward your medical records to any practice or office of your choosing free of charge at anytime. Email info at durango sports medicine dot com with the contact info and I can send it over.

Thanks everyone for your support and trust in the past 2 years.
-Timothy Durkin, DO, FAAEM, CAQSM

Given the ongoing COVID19 public health crisis, online scheduling has been turned off. Please call the office if you have a issue that needs attention. I will try to help you with a phone consultation. If there is interest, video consults are also a possibility. Thanks for your understanding, there are very difficult times ahead and we need to take as many precautions as possible.

Since all gyms in the state are now closed, its a good time to do something reasonable outside or stream a yoga class. Don't go too hard, its not a good time to have an injury that needs hospital care. -Dr Durkin.

Employed vs independent doctors: Numbers don't tell the whole story

"When hospitals or private equity groups buy up doctors, costs skyrocket, quality goes down, and, if the hospital doing the acquiring is nonprofit, communities suffer financial harm because all the taxes that independent practice once paid come off the tax rolls."

Why independence is not a thing of the past. Rather, it is the future of medicine.

Got out to train with La Plata County SAR last weekend. This was a multi-agency exercise, simulating a critically injured ice climber in Cascade Canyon. This has happened more than once - please, please double check before rappelling off the route!

I'm excited to be supporting several sports events in our community with medical coverage in the coming weeks.

Saturday, Feb 2 - 10am. Snowdown Strongman at CrossFit Durango. Come cheer for the region' strongest men and women as they move giant objects and accomplish amazing feats. Wear your superhero costume! Registration is full. Info at crossfitdurango.com or their FB page.

Sunday, Feb 3 - 12 noon. First ever truck pull at Illete Fitness. This will be a spectacle not to be missed as teams of men and women pull a giant truck. Info and registration at http://www.illetefitness.co

Saturday, Feb 9 - 9am. Silverton Whiteout- a 10 hour, over snow endurance fat bike race. Come out to cheer or bring your bike. Info and registration at silvertonwhiteout.com

If you are planning a sport event in the area, please feel welcome contact me to discuss your medical / safety plan. I'm always hopeful to use my cowbell more than my defibrillator, but having the right people and equipment to help your athletes is essential!

I hope you have a safe, fun and enjoyable and winter season, but if you find yourself injured, keep Durango Sports Medicine in mind for personalized service to get you back out enjoying all the sport and recreation in our area! - Dr Durkin

Dr. Durkin, I'm so happy I came to see you! I think you figured out (finally!) what was wrong with my foot. You thought my orthotic arch supports were “too aggressive” and that I needed a brace for my ankle which I have sprained a million times. I ditched the orthotics and got a brace and I’m doing really well. This was two weeks ago and yesterday I went without the brace and good shoes and wore my flip flops all day while doing errands and guess what—my foot hurt again. So lesson learned. Good shoes with proper support. Thank you for diagnosing the root cause of my foot issues. I would recommend you to anyone! Kilimanjaro (pain free) here I come!
