I Am Not a Human Pacifier

Many mothers are told "Don't let you baby use you for a pacifier." This post does a great job of explaining the flaw with that logic. Babies nurse for many reasons other than food, and none are wrong. http://nurshable.com/2012/05/04/i-am-not-a-human-pacifier/

Dear Daughter, You are three weeks old. You nursed pretty much straight through the night last night, as I sort of drifted in and out of being fully awake. You're going through a growth spurt. When...

The Amazing New Science of Breast Milk

Interesting.

When we come out of the womb, we make our way to the breast. We enter the world knowing we’re mammals, with milk on our minds. But even as grown-ups, we have never known exactly what’s in that milk—or, as strange as it may sound, what the point of it...

What are the Booby Traps? | Best for Babes

Which Booby Traps have you experienced? What are your ideas for avoiding/overcoming them?

Most moms are not making it past the first few weeks of breastfeeding because they are being sabotageddailyby cultural and institutional barriers — or as we call them, the “booby traps!” Think about it. Why, all of a sudden, for the first time in millennia, do women fear that they are not capable...

Props to the nurses and other staff at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. My first grandchild was born there this week at 29 weeks. Colson James is doing well and I can't say enough positive things about the support and wonderful breastfeeding knowledge the nurses and others have shared with my son and daughter-in-law. She is pumping like a champ after a very difficult birth.

Congratulations to the hospitals that were chosen!

Although breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health measures for infants and mothers, half of US-born babies are given formula within the first week, and by 9 months, only 31% of babies are breastfeeding at all. Breastfeeding rates are lowest among low socio-economic populations. T...
