IS YOUR CHILD READY FOR THE COLD AND ASTHMA SEASON?
in october there is a significant spike in the number of children requiring ER visits and or Hospitalizations as a results of asthma attacks. Prevention and control of asthma are very importnat. You need to prepare your child before the cold season when there is an increase in exposure to cold virus. If your child shows symptoms of asthma when he or she gets a cold, talk to their doctor about which medication might be appropriate for preventing asthma attacks that may be trigger by common cold viruses. Also insure that your child has his or her rescue medication on hand at all times.

Being prepared mean you'll feel a lot better about cold seasson too!

Fourth Week: "Ready, Set, GO!"

Keep it Maintained – Poorly-maintained homes increase the risk for deteriorated lead-based paint in older housing which is the primary cause of lead poisoning in children less than 6 years of age. Lead may cause learning disabilities, impaired hearing, anemia, kidney damage, damage to central nervous system, coma, convulsions, and even death.

Keep it Temperature Controlled – Houses that do not maintain adequate temperatures may place the safety of residents at increased risk from exposure to extreme cold or heat.

A maintenance plan will keep a home safe and healthy and ready for extreme temperatures.

Third Week: "Door to DOOR!"

Keep it Clean – Clean homes help reduce pest infestations and exposure to contaminants. Keeping a house clean reduces the contact with dust mites, mold, mice, rats, cockroaches, and more. It reduces the use of pesticides and also heavy metals such as lead.

Keep it Safe – The most common causes of home injury deaths are falls, poisoning, fires and burns, choking and suffocation, drowning, and guns. The most vulnerable age groups are infants and elderly. A majority of injuries among children occur in the home. Falls are the most frequent cause of residential injuries to children, followed by injuries from objects in the home, burns, and poisonings.

**Some cleaning habits and protection measures are important for the entire home.

Second Week: "Sherlock HOMES!"

Keep it Dry – Mold and Moisture increase allergens and asthma triggers and can cause deterioration of your home.

Keep it Pest Free – Many pest treatments that pose risks for families with health problems or expose young children and pets to poisonous residue. Non-pesticide treatments are best for a first line of defense

**Be a detective to find water leaks and entryways for pests around the house.

First Week: “Change is in the Air!”

Keep it Ventilated – Studies show that increasing the fresh air supply in a home improves respiratory health. Air filters in HV AC units collect and protect families from many particulates found in the air.

Keeping it Ventilated means that the house has openings for pollution to escape from inside. If any portion of air leaves a house, the same amount must enter. Air can be hot, cold, wet, dry, or polluted when it enters or exits a house.

Keep it Contaminant Free – Chemical exposures include lead, radon, pesticides, and environmental to***co smoke. Exposures to radon gas, carbon monoxide, and second-hand to***co smoke are far higher indoors than outside.

To keep a house Contaminant Free it is necessary not to smoke in the house and never smoke around children. It is also important to avoid using products that have high levels of volatile organic compounds.

Reducing the hazards in the air you breathe can have positive impacts on your health.
