As 2018 approaches in a couple days, there are goals that everyone would like to achieve for a better version of themselves.

Great article on Cravings from Precision Nutrition.

CRAVINGS!

The discussion started with this question...

"I have a client who struggling with snacking, she works from home. She knows it’s an issue, she knows what her goals are but just can’t seem to comply with anything. The cravings are overwhelming her. She’s frustrated and disappointed in herself. I have suggested first following the eat slow, then 80%, also recognize why she wants the snack, replacing the snack with a healthier option but she’s still eating junk."

Thoughts from Dr. John Berardi:

1) Is she legitimately hungry?

As in... she's not getting enough calories and/or nutrients in her "main meals" and, as a result, she's thinking about food the entire rest of the day.

If this is true... no "strategies" will make it go away except for either a) eating more calories, or b) eating foods in her "main meals" that produce higher satiety.

2) Is she feeling deprived?

As in... she's getting enough food but missing a few things (i.e. sugar, fat, whatever) that makes her feel emotionally satisfied or like she had a "complete meal"?

In this case, it's less about an actual physiological hunger but more of a physiology meets psychology thing. And the goal is to EITHER find foods that help her feel that same satisfaction OR to give her your blessing to have some of this "junk" in small amounts, within reason, at the right times.

When you make it less about "compliance" and "junk", clients tend to resist less. Just like kids. And every other human.
Make them "comply" and put things "off limits" and, yea, it doesn't work out so well.

3) Is she seeking comfort or something else from food?

As in... she's not craving food at all, but a particular feeling that eating gives her (i.e. calm, happy, de-stressed, in control, whatever).

In this case, some deeper work is to be done. Many of the newer forms in the Level 1 Certification tackle "food and feelings" and other awareness strategies to help clients look for patterns in their lives... like curious investigators.

Over time, if they stay tuned in and aware of what's really happening, below the surface, there's a better opportunity to change.

And one bonus one...

4) Does she know how to "sit with" uncomfortable feelings?

As in..."I'm bored, or sad, or anxious, or hungry and I have to do something about it". (vs. saying "It's okay to feel what I'm feeling right now without rushing to fix it or feeling guilty for feeling it."

If not, try mind-body scanning or other methods to help people be present, tuned in, and "mindful". Of course, this is not a quick fix. But it can help pave the way for better emotional regulation.

In the end...

Lots to unpack here, of course.

I post it all not as a quick fix, but as framework for further investigation. Because not all "cravings" are the same. Not all clients are the same.

As coaches, it's up to us to go deeper into what's *really* happening with each client, especially when they're stuck.
And that's impossible without some kind of "framework" for how to think about complex issues.
