World Health Ambassador USA (WHA) AN INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL RELIEF GROUP
(3)

WHA missions provide in-depth medical and dental treatment in many settings, including regional medical centers, provincial hospitals, and village clinics. WHA seeks to utilize local health care resources to ensure continuity of care for patients as well as to control follow-up costs for patients. WHA also seeks to work with other non-profit organizations in the United States and abroad by offering its expertise and to strengthen its own capabilities. To ensure durable and lasting benefits, WHA is committed to building the capability of local health care providers and the capacity of local health care services. To this end, WHA mission teams (a) work side-by-side with local health care providers to actively share medical knowledge and teach new techniques; (b) conduct medical and dental lectures at local medical schools and school of health sciences; (c) donate medical equipment to local health care institutions and train local medical staff to use the equipment. Our integrated approach helps ensure maximum benefits and sustainability of health care delivery to the targeted population.

WHA participated in the 2018 Vietnamese International Boy Scout Jamboree held at Camp Snyder in Virginia from June 28 to July 3rd, 2018.

WHA team members helped staff the first aid station in support of the 1,600 strong boy scout and girl scout members from across the US and several foreign countries. The first aid station was constantly busy as the event was held during some of the hottest days of this summer with sunny sky and temperature hitting mid-90s.

It was a good experience not only able to provide care but to explain to the scouts what WHA does. There was also much interests from the scouts in how to provide first aid. WHA wishes the Scouts much success in future activities.

“I’m so excited to volunteer for WHA because I believe that health is something that everybody should have access to. Helping people is not just “a nice thing to do”, it is necessary. (WEEK 3)
UPDATE: WHA Dental Mission to Vietnam November 2017

In this series, we have related personal experiences shared by WHA Team Members who went on the Dental Mission to Vietnam this year. Although the weather caused unexpected changes to their planned itinerary, our team members adapted on the spot, meeting each road block with a great attitude and a persistent spirit. As a result, they were able to make a positive impact! Dr. Nicole Rivera shares a glimpse into her WHA Mission trip to Vietnam:

"I am grateful we had the opportunity to visit three orphanages! I am also glad we had the opportunity to deliver much needed supplies and talk with Dr. Tomy and [the WHA-Vietnam] team to share our experiences as dentists. The WHA chapter in Vietnam plans on going to Phu Quy Island next month. Our trip was emotional and filled with challenges due to weather and
travel conditions. It was still an honor to connect with the kids, understand their circumstance at the orphanages and share what we could with them."
~ Dr. Nicole Rivera

PLEASE NOTE: The WHA-Vietnam Dental Team will continue work in this area this month and the USA Dental Team will travel to Hoi An, Vietnam, next July. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved or donate to in support of those served by WHA, please visit www.whausa.org.

(WEEK 2)

UPDATE: WHA Dental Mission to Vietnam November 2017
& Reflections from Dr. Long Pham

Over the past several weeks, US members of our WHA Dental Team traveled to Vietnam to meet up with members of our Vietnam chapter to provide care to the remote region of Phu Quy Island. Flooding and compromised road conditions resulted in several detours during the trip. Fortunately, the WHA-Vietnam had back-up plans that enabled WHA to visit several orphanages during the visit. The team provided dental equipment, spoke with the leaders of the orphanages and offered assessment for the children as well.

Due to limited resources, children in this area do not receive dental care until the age of six. WHA would like to congratulate and thank the WHA-USA and WHA-Vietnam Dental Teams for investing their time, resources and energy in serving a community that would otherwise go unnoticed.
---------------------------------------------

In this continuing series, we relate personal experiences shared by WHA Team Members who went on the Dental Mission to Vietnam this year. Although the weather caused unexpected changes to their planned itinerary, our team members adapted on the spot, meeting each road block with a great attitude and a persistent spirit. As a result, they were able to make a positive impact! Dr. Long Pham shares a heartfelt response to experiences in Vietnam:

"I joined this mission trip right in the middle of the busiest time of year for my family's three office practice. But it was a trip I couldn't miss, as I joined my mom, dad and brother on our first overseas mission together. Expectations were high, so when we heard the news that the primary mission to the Phu Quy Island was postponed due to flooding and the secondary mission site in the mountains was impossible to reach, the US mission team and I were heartbroken. How would we help and what would we tell everyone when we returned?

Our mindset shifted when we joined Dr. Tomy and several other local dentists of the WHA-Vietnam Chapter. They were all in good spirits and happy they could share a day with us doing some good at three different orphanages. At the orphanages we visited with the staff, listened to how they run their operations and saw how the kids spend their day-to-day lives. At the first orphanage, Dr. Hanh and I were talking to a five-year-old girl in her crib. She was noticeably in pain and we asked her if her teeth hurt, she nodded yes. To be sure we understood each other, we proceeded to ask where does it hurt, she then pointed to her lower left jaw. Dr. Hanh then asked if it hurts at night, and again she nodded yes. We asked her to open her mouth to show us and immediately saw that her lower molars had massive decay and needed to be treated. We asked the caretakers if the kids see the dentist but unfortunately local dentists won't treat anyone under six years of age. It was disheartening to learn this is reality and it heightened my desire to help.

We reported our findings and WHA has decided to revisit these orphanages to provide the immediate dental care they need through the local WHA-Vietnam Chapter. In the end, our mission to Vietnam did make a difference and the people of the island will receive the care so desperately need."

~ Dr. Long Dang Pham, WHA Dental Team Member
