National Spine & Pain Centers

National Spine & Pain Centers (NSPC) is one of the nation’s largest pain management practices in the United States. Formed in 2011 with a re-brand of The Spine Center – NSPC quickly expanded, partnering with Capitol Spine & Pain in 2012. We strive to bring high quality providers in the specialty of pain management together to offer an extensive network to meet the needs of an ever growing population of patients living in chronic pain. In late 2012 our affiliations grew with the addition of New York Pain Physicians (now New York Spine & Pain Physicians), bringing our number of centers to over 60 with close to 100 providers in D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, New York, Virginia and West Virginia.

Vertebroplasty Procedure | Effective Treatment for Spinal Fractures

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are similar procedures. Guided by fluoroscopy (x-ray), the physician inserts a needle into the damaged vertebra and injects specially formulated bone cement. In vertebroplasty, bone cement is injected into the fractured bone. In Kyphoplasty, a balloon is first inserted and inflated to expand the compressed vertebra before filling the space with bone cement.

#TreatingPain

Untreated, spinal compression fractures can cause severe back and hip pain. Vertebroplasty has been delivering excellent outcomes since the early 90s.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is an innovative technology that addresses some of the most difficult pain problems experienced. Identified as an effective treatment option for many chronic sufferers, SCS is most often used for neuropathic pain, including cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, diabetic neuropathy, post-laminectomy syndrome (residual pain after back surgery), and complex regional pain syndrome* (CRPS).

Spine Pain, Lower Back, Neck Pain? | We Have Helped 250,000+ Patients

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is often seen in people whose work or hobbies result in repetitive motions of the wrist and hand, including musicians, hair stylists, assembly line workers (especially those who operate vibrating tools) and those who use keyboards.

The result can be burning, numbness or pain in the wrist and hand that can ultimately lead to decreased gripping strength and coordination.

Medial Branch Blocks | Treats Pain in the Back, Neck or Thoracic Spine

Medial branch blocks can be used independently to provide long-term pain relief.

They can also be used to precisely identify the facet joints as the cause of pain, and are the preliminary procedure prior to radiofrequency neurotomy of the medial branch nerves.

The facet joints are the small joints located between each vertebra that provide the spine with both stability and flexibility. Facet syndrome occurs when one or more of these joints become inflamed or irritated.

#TreatingPain

Medial branch blocks in one area are generally limited to three within 6 months. Usually, only 1 or 2 injections are required to obtain pain relief.

Drug Pump - Intrathecal IT Pump | Pain Management Treatment

An intrathecal (IT) pump is a small medical device, that delivers pain relief medications directly to the spinal cord. When medications are delivered here, they have a stronger and faster effect than medications taken in pill form. They also cause fewer side effects.

An IT pump is often a last resort treatment for cancer pain. It is also useful for people with other chronic pain conditions such as post-laminectomy syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), arachnoiditis, chronic pancreatitis, and chronic muscle spasms.

#TreatingPain

IT Pumps are commonly used for patients suffering from pain symptoms related to CRPS. This outpatient, non-surgical procedure provides long lasting relief.

Chronic Discogenic Back Pain Treatment | Disc Regenerative Therapy

Over the years, there have been numerous treatment tools available to address the acute and chronic symptoms of degenerative disc disease, one of the most prevalent causes of low back pain.

These conservative non-surgical interventions have often provided effective symptom relief. However, some patients have failed to benefit from these conventional therapies and have resorted to lumbar fusion surgery. Now, Disc Regenerative Therapy (DRT) offers a promising new option for treating chronic discogenic back pain.

#TreatingPain

Pain management specialists around the world incorporate DRT into treatment plans for patients with chronic back pain, reducing need for costly surgeries.

Kyphoplasty Treatment for Spinal Compression Fracture | Patient Success Story

Meet Virginia Jenkins!

Virginia Jenkins vividly recalls the searing pain a spinal compression fracture caused her mother. So when Virginia woke up one morning and screamed in pain as she tried to get out of bed, memories of her mother’s compression fracture came flooding back to her—and with good reason.

Virginia suffers from osteoporosis, just as her mother had. The brittle bones in her back are easily susceptible to fracture. But unlike other bones in the body, broken vertebrae in the back generally crumble rather than fracture in two.

Read Virginia's success outcome below:

#TreatingPain

Dr. Kendall recommended kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive interventional procedure that helped correct Virginia's spinal compression fracture.

Scoliosis | How It Can Be Effectively Treated Without Surgery

Scoliosis is an abnormal, side to side curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty.

Scoliosis is the term used to describe an irregular curvature of the spine. Instead of running in a nearly straight line down the center of the back, the spine may curve significantly to the side, resulting in a “C” or even an “S” shape. This curvature may worsen over time and ultimately cause muscle spasms, pain and even impact breathing.

Chronic pain plagues 44% of veterans

Iraq War veteran Zachary Muñoz suffers from chronic back pain and the lingering effects of a traumatic brain injury, but he knows he is lucky to be alive.

A bomb exploded under his military vehicle in 2007, throwing the former weapons intelligence team member against the window, injuring his head, shoulder and back. The ground below the vehicle contained about 200 pounds of homemade explosives, he later learned.

Meet Paul Shearin!

Paul Shearin is no stranger to pain. During his 30-year career in critical care, trauma and pulmonary medicine he often had to lift and move patients and medical equipment.

This led to herniated discs and other back injuries. But thanks to the care he received from the physicians at National Spine & Pain Centers, he was able to get back on his feet and back to work as clinical director and administrative director of Pulmonary and Neurology Medicine at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.

Degenerative Disc Disease | Common Cause of Lower Back Pain

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is weakening and breakdown of one or more vertebral discs, a structure that sits between the bones in the spine to provide cushioning and allow movement between the spine levels.

This condition can develop as a natural part of the aging process, but it may also result from injury. Even though “disease” is in the name, this process is local wear and tear of the spine and is not a part of a systemic illness. DDD most often occurs in the low back, or lumbar spine, but can affect the neck and mid back as well.
