October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month.
This topic can be challenging to learn about, to listen to, and even harder to experience. The reality is that pregnancy loss is more common than a lot of people realize. Although infant loss isn’t as common, it is still a difficult reality.
Being aware isn’t about promoting fear or sadness, but instead recognizing that you are not alone, and helping loved ones better understand how to support you.
Just last month, I experienced a miscarriage early in my pregnancy. As a birth worker, I know the statistics. I support other people who experience loss. But no matter how prepared you may be with information, going through it yourself is different.
I questioned. I grieved. I wondered. I hoped. And still, I needed to hear that I didn’t do anything wrong. That it wasn’t my fault. And I needed every “hey, checking in” text and call.
If you experienced a loss, you are not alone. And it wasn’t your fault.
