๐Ÿšจ TRAINING THURSDAY | NOSEBLEEDS: STOP DOING THIS!

๐Ÿฉธ Someoneโ€™s nose starts bleeding. Whatโ€™s your first move?

If your answer is โ€œtilt their head back,โ€ itโ€™s time to unlearn that old advice.

โŒ DONโ€™T tilt the head backward.

Blood can run down the throat, potentially causing choking, nausea, or vomiting.

Instead, remember this simple first-aid technique. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿฉน THE RIGHT WAY TO HELP WITH A NOSEBLEED

1๏ธโƒฃ SIT UP AND LEAN FORWARD

Keep the person sitting upright, with their head tilted slightly forwardโ€”not backward.

2๏ธโƒฃ PINCH THE SOFT PART OF THE NOSE

Using your thumb and index finger, firmly pinch both nostrils closed just below the hard, bony bridge of the nose.

3๏ธโƒฃ HOLD THE PRESSURE FOR 10โ€“15 MINUTES

Set a timer. Keep continuous pressure without releasing your grip to check whether the bleeding has stopped.

4๏ธโƒฃ BREATHE THROUGH THE MOUTH

Encourage the person to breathe through their mouth and spit out any blood that collects there rather than swallowing it.

5๏ธโƒฃ KNOW WHEN TO GET HELP

๐Ÿš‘ Call 911 for severe or gushing bleeding, or if the nosebleed follows a serious head, neck, or spinal injury.

Seek medical attention if bleeding continues after 15 minutes of continuous pressure or the person becomes lightheaded. If they take blood-thinning medication or have a bleeding disorder, get medical advice if the bleeding persists.

These steps follow guidance from the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Sources are listed below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿง  THE MYTH THAT CAN GET IN THE WAY

People often repeat what they were taught growing up. But familiar advice isnโ€™t always correct first aid.

The goal isnโ€™t simply to react quickly. Itโ€™s to respond correctly, calmly, and confidently.

๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TRAINING THURSDAY CHALLENGE

Without looking at this post, can you remember the three essentials?

โœ… Sit upright and lean forward.
โœ… Pinch the soft part of the nose.
โœ… Hold continuous pressure for 10โ€“15 minutes.

๐Ÿ’ฌ LETโ€™S TEST YOUR FIRST-AID KNOWLEDGE!

Before reading this post, would you have tilted the personโ€™s head backward or leaned it forward?

No judgmentโ€”this is how we learn, correct old myths, and become better prepared to help someone.

๐Ÿ“š Want to build confidence beyond reading a post?

Rescue Ready CPR & First Aid provides training to help people prepare to respond when emergencies happen.

๐Ÿšจ TRAINING THURSDAY: SEIZURE FIRST AID

THE ONE THING YOU SHOULD NEVER DO DURING A SEIZURE.

Imagine someone suddenly falls to the ground and begins shaking.

People gather.
Someone panics.
Another person shouts, โ€œPut something in their mouth!โ€

STOP. โœ‹

That advice is a dangerous myth.

NEVER PUT ANYTHING IN A PERSON'S MOUTH DURING A SEIZURE.

Not a spoon.
Not a wallet.
Not your fingers.
Not water or medication.

A person cannot swallow their tongue. Putting objects in their mouth can cause serious injuries, damage teeth, and put both the person and the helper at risk.

So what SHOULD you do?

Remember these three words:

๐Ÿ›‘ STAY. SAFE. SIDE.

๐Ÿ•’ 1. STAY WITH THEM

Remain calm and time the seizure from beginning to end. Stay nearby and monitor what happens.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ 2. KEEP THEM SAFE

Move furniture, sharp objects, and other hazards away. If they're falling, help guide them to the ground when possible. Place something soft and flat under their head if you can do so safely.

Never hold them down or try to stop their movements.

โ†ช๏ธ 3. SIDE โ€” WHEN SAFE AND APPROPRIATE

If they're not awake or aware, gently turn them onto their side when you can do so safely. This helps keep their airway clear. Loosen tight clothing around their neck.

Stay with them until they're awake, alert, and recovering.

๐Ÿš‘ WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL 911?

Call 911 if:

๐Ÿ”ด The seizure lasts 5 minutes or longer.

๐Ÿ”ด Another seizure begins before the person recovers.

๐Ÿ”ด It's their first known seizure.

๐Ÿ”ด They have difficulty breathing or waking up afterward.

๐Ÿ”ด They're injured, the seizure happens in water, or another serious concern arises.

When in doubt, call 911 and follow the dispatcher's instructions.

๐Ÿง  THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIER

Seizures can look frightening. It's natural to want to grab the person, stop the movements, or do something immediately.

But helping does not mean controlling every movement.

Sometimes the most important thing you can do is protect the person from injury, give them space, and let the seizure run its course while you monitor them.

๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TRAINING THURSDAY CHALLENGE

Ask yourself:

โœ… Would I know how to protect someone's head?

โœ… Would I remember to time the seizure?

โœ… Would I know when to call 911?

โœ… Would I resist the urge to put something in their mouth?

Knowing what NOT to do can be just as important as knowing what TO do.

๐Ÿ’ฌ QUESTION FOR YOU: Before reading this, did you know that putting something in someone's mouth during a seizure is dangerous?

Share this post. Someone in your family, workplace, school, or community may need this information one day.

๐Ÿ  MONDAY MINDSET: WOULD YOUR FAMILY KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU COULDN'T SPEAK?

Imagine a medical emergency happens.

You canโ€™t explain what hurts.
You canโ€™t remember an important phone number.
You canโ€™t tell the person trying to help you what medications you take.

Would your family know what to do next?

We prepare for emergencies by buying supplies, charging our phones, and keeping important documents.

But there's one part of preparedness we sometimes overlook:

Making sure the people closest to us know the information that could help protect us.

๐Ÿง  HERE'S WHAT EVERY FAMILY SHOULD KNOW:

๐Ÿ“ž 1. WHO TO CALL
Does your family know when to call 911, where to find emergency contacts, and how to give responders your location?

๐Ÿ’Š 2. WHAT INFORMATION MATTERS
Keep an updated list of your medications, allergies, and important medical information somewhere accessible. Share it with trusted people who may need it in an emergency.

โค๏ธ 3. WHAT YOUR NORMAL LOOKS LIKE
Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, facial drooping, or weakness can signal a stroke. These symptoms require immediate emergency attentionโ€”even if they improve.

๐Ÿ  4. WHERE TO FIND THE ESSENTIALS
Does someone you trust know where to find your emergency information, medical supplies, and any relevant care instructions?

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ 5. WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU NEED HELP
Teach family members to describe what they observe rather than trying to diagnose the problem.

โ€œIโ€™m at [location]. Something has changed suddenly. They are having trouble speaking, and this is not normal for them.โ€

That information can help the 911 dispatcher understand what is happening.

๐Ÿง  THE PART WE DON'T ALWAYS THINK ABOUT

We often assume our loved ones will know what to do because they know us.

But knowing someone and knowing how to respond during a medical emergency are two different things.

Don't leave your family's emergency response to guesswork.

๐ŸŽฏ YOUR MONDAY ACTION STEP

Take 10 minutes today to:

โœ… Update your emergency contacts.

โœ… Create a current medication and allergy list.

โœ… Make sure a trusted family member knows where to find important information.

โœ… Discuss what to do if someone suddenly becomes confused, unresponsive, or unable to speak.

โœ… Consider learning CPR, first aid, and how to recognize common medical emergencies.

You cannot predict every emergency. But you can make it easier for the people who love you to help when it matters.

๐Ÿ’ฌ LET'S TALK: If you suddenly couldn't speak or explain what was wrong, would your family know where to start?

Share this with someone you love. This is a conversation worth having before an emergency happens.

๐Ÿฉธ TRAINING THURSDAY

PRESSURE. PRESSURE. PRESSURE.

When someone is bleeding badly, people sometimes freeze.

They look at the blood.
They look for a medical professional.
They wonder if they should touch the wound.

But in a life-threatening bleeding emergency, waiting is not a strategy.

The first move is often the simplest:

๐Ÿ–๏ธ DIRECT PRESSURE.

Place cloth, gauze, or another absorbent material directly over the wound.

Then push firmly.

Not lightly.
Not for five seconds.
Not while repeatedly lifting the dressing to see if it worked.

Firm, steady pressure.

The American College of Surgeons' STOP THE BLEEDยฎ program teaches three basic techniques for controlling life-threatening bleeding:

๐Ÿฉธ 1. DIRECT PRESSURE
Apply firm, steady pressure directly over the wound.

๐Ÿฉธ 2. PACK THE WOUND
For certain wounds, packing material into the wound and maintaining pressure can help control severe bleeding.

๐Ÿฉธ 3. APPLY A TOURNIQUET
For life-threatening bleeding from an arm or leg, a properly applied tourniquet can be a lifesaving tool.

๐Ÿšจ HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S SERIOUS?

Bleeding that is continuous, heavy, pooling, or spurting should be treated as potentially life-threatening.

And here's the part people don't always realize:

You don't have to be a doctor to be useful.

You need to recognize the emergency.

You need to call 911.

And you need to know what you can do right now while help is coming.

๐Ÿง  THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIER

A lot of people are afraid they'll make things worse.

But doing nothing while someone is losing a dangerous amount of blood can be worse than taking appropriate action within your training.

Pressure can buy time.

๐ŸŽฏ YOUR TRAINING THURSDAY CHALLENGE:

If you saw someone with severe bleeding right now, would you know:

โœ”๏ธ What makes bleeding life-threatening?
โœ”๏ธ Where to apply pressure?
โœ”๏ธ When wound packing may be appropriate?
โœ”๏ธ When a tourniquet may be needed?
โœ”๏ธ What to do while 911 is on the way?

Don't just keep a bleeding-control kit nearby.

Learn how to use it.

Because equipment doesn't stop bleeding by itself.

Trained people do.

๐Ÿง  MINDSET MONDAY

๐Ÿšจ YOUR EMERGENCY KIT CAN'T SAVE SOMEONE BY ITSELF.

You can have:

๐Ÿ”ฆ Flashlights
๐Ÿ”‹ Extra batteries
๐Ÿ’ง Bottled water
๐Ÿฉน A first-aid kit
๐Ÿงค Gloves
๐Ÿ“ป Emergency supplies

And still not be fully prepared.

Why?

Because supplies don't know what to do.

People do.

๐Ÿง  PREPAREDNESS IS MORE THAN WHAT'S IN THE BAG.

Imagine someone gets seriously injured.

You reach for your first-aid kitโ€ฆ

But do you know:

โ“ What to use?

โ“ How to use it?

โ“ When to call 911?

โ“ How to recognize a life-threatening emergency?

โ“ What NOT to do?

โ“ When the situation is beyond your training?

That's the difference between having emergency supplies and being prepared to respond.

๐Ÿฉน YOUR KIT IS A TOOL.

A first-aid kit can provide supplies.

An AED can analyze a heart rhythm and deliver a shock when appropriate.

A tourniquet can help control life-threatening bleeding when used properly.

But none of those tools can make the decision for you.

That's where training matters.

โค๏ธ REAL PREPAREDNESS LOOKS LIKE:

๐Ÿง  KNOWLEDGE โ€” Understanding what you're looking at.

๐Ÿ‘€ RECOGNITION โ€” Knowing when something is an emergency.

๐Ÿ“ž ACTION โ€” Knowing when and how to activate emergency help.

๐Ÿ‘ SKILLS โ€” Being able to use the tools you've been trained to use.

๐Ÿ›‘ LIMITS โ€” Knowing when to stop and let professionals take over.

๐Ÿšจ ASK YOURSELF THIS TODAY:

If someone in your home, workplace, church, gym, or community had a serious medical emergency tonightโ€ฆ

Would you know:

WHO to call?

WHAT to do first?

WHERE the emergency equipment is?

HOW to use it?

If the answer is โ€œI'm not sureโ€โ€ฆ

That's not a reason to panic.

That's your starting point.

๐Ÿ”ฅ TODAY'S MINDSET:

Preparedness isn't just what you own.

It's what you know how to do.

Don't wait for the emergency to discover what you don't know.

Learn it. Practice it. Stay ready.
