“I have Type 2 diabetes. Why won’t Medicare cover my CGM?”

We see versions of this question in our comments every day, so let’s clear up an important misconception:

Having Type 2 diabetes alone doesn’t automatically qualify someone for Medicare CGM coverage — but you also don’t necessarily have to be on insulin.

Medicare has two potential pathways for eligible patients:

💉 You’re being treated with insulin

OR

📉 You have a documented history of problematic hypoglycemia that meets Medicare’s requirements.

There are additional coverage and documentation requirements, which is why two people with Type 2 diabetes can have very different experiences getting a CGM covered.

Don’t automatically assume you don’t qualify because you aren’t taking insulin.

Medicare may cover a continuous glucose monitor for people with diabetes who meet the applicable coverage requirements and:

💉 Use insulin

OR

📉 Have a documented history of problematic hypoglycemia that meets Medicare's criteria.

That means some people who aren't taking insulin may still qualify.

Medicare has two important pathways that may allow someone with diabetes to qualify for CGM coverage:

💉 You use insulin
You do not have to take multiple insulin injections every day under the current Medicare CGM criteria.

OR

📉 You have documented problematic hypoglycemia
Certain people who are not using insulin may still qualify when Medicare’s requirements for problematic low blood sugar and medical documentation are met.

That second pathway is the one many people simply don’t know about.
