“OMG you took his feathers off?!”
Yes.
Yes I sure did.
👉🏻 Feathered breeds sometimes have to say goodbye to their feathers for a variety of reasons. And sometimes, there’s no amount of regular grooming, combing or currying that can help to prevent or fix what lies hidden underneath them.
⚠️ Some common lower limb complications of feathered-breeds include:
• Chronic Progressive Lymphedema (CPL)
• Cellulitis or Lymphangitis
• Hyperkeratosis
• Mud Fever
• Summer Sores
• Bot Fly Eggs
🌎 Now, these conditions can still show up on horses of all breeds but, the feathered breeds are at highest risk due to how long, thick and dense the feathered hair is that surrounds their lower limbs, trapping dirt, debris and moisture. Often, when issues arise, it is covered up and hidden under the feather. By clipping the legs fully, owners are able to treat affected areas appropriately and effectively.
For this horse though, he doesn’t have anything wrong with his legs under his feathers ☺️.
His owner just wanted him fully clipped. 💁🏻♀️
And there’s nothing wrong with that choice.
