Fix Your Digestion

Constipation can have many roots, but it makes sense to have a look at nutrition and what we are and are not putting into our bodies every day.

Contrary to popular belief, constipation is not just a fiber issue. In fact, in some cases, fiber will make constipation and abdominal discomfort, cramping and bloating much worse. Adding supplemental fiber to a dry, dehydrated system will certainly worsen it, and certain types of fiber (think high-FODMAP) may not be appropriate for those with SIBO or dysbiosis.

The nutritional factors that are the foundation of good bowel movements are as such:

Water: A well hydrated body and bowel keeps things moving smoothly. Make sure you are drinking enough water so that your pee is a light, clear yellow.

Fat: Healthy fats (wild caught fatty fish, nuts, nut butters, coconut, coconut products, grass fed butter, fish oil, MCT oil, seeds, olive oil, etc) keep the digestive tract well lubricated.

Electrolytes/Minerals: These compounds maintain fluid balance and fluid pressure inside the cells and even the lumen of the digestive tract - key for motility.

Fiber: Best obtained through the use of a variety of vegetables eaten daily. I recommend consuming 6 cups veggies per day. Veggies are a better bang-for-your-buck source of fiber than grains, legumes and fruit because per serving, they have lower amounts of starch while still maintaining good fiber content.
