The Ancestral Habits That May Have Supported Better Health

Before ultraprocessed foods and sedentary jobs became the norm, people relied on nutrient-dense whole foods, daily physical movement and natural light and dark cycles to stay well. Researchers note that Americans' resting metabolic rate has declined roughly 6% since 1820, a shift linked to less daily movement and a 25% drop in work-related energy expenditure since 1870.

Traditional diets also leaned on whole-animal eating, including organ meats and bone broths, rather than the lean, highly processed cuts common today.

Sally Kuzemchak a registered dietitian, says "Mushrooms are extremely low in calories. There are only about 20 calories in a serving of five white button mushrooms or one whole portabella mushroom! Yet mushrooms are also satisfying. In one study published in the journal Appetite, people who swapped mushrooms for meat at lunch reduced the amount of calories and fat they took in, but they reported feeling just as full and satisfied as those who ate meat." Sally Kuzemchak a registered dietitian, recommends including fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut to your meals. These are foods that are naturally preserved by bacteria, and they’re good for the “microbiome”. That’s the name for the trillions of bacteria that live in your gut, where a lot of cells involved in immunity actually reside. Fermented foods help beneficial bacteria flourish in the gut, leaving less room for harmful bugs. https://wb.md/4AW7s51
