Don’t let a number on the scale be your main goal! Non scale victories are where the good stuff is guys... like doing a freaking tough hike that you’ve tried multiple times to do! My client is kicking butt 🙌🏻 Besides, at the end of the day, NOBODY cares how much you weight other than you. I promise. But people do care if you can run, play, and have the energy and confidence to enjoy life with them. Happy Friday everyone! Go do something fun and active today 🤗•

I’ve been skinnier, but I wasn’t as healthy when I was... you see the pattern? Don’t let my post fool you though, I struggle with this just as much as any other lady. Sharing this from @wildlyonswellness because it’s gold. You can eat all the things, really. I promise. Nobody is going to get fat from eating a real hamburger. Just eat it. Also, eat ice cream too because it’s delicious. Also also, if your diet tells you not to, then ditch it. Fast. That diet is going to mess you up more than a hamburger with a bun ever will.

Don’t get stuck thinking you need to spend hours in the gym. Many studies have shown that for heart health and weight loss, shorter more intense workouts are more effective. Don’t have an hour? That’s totally fine! Most of my workouts are less than 20 minutes! You’ll be amazed at the results you get if you just give it that little extra push for that short time. Set a timer for 10 minutes and commit to moving the whole time! See how much work you can get done in that 10 minutes.... then repeat it in a few days and try to get more reps in. You got this! Wanting to workout and not sure where to start? Here... let me give you a quick guide:
Start with some strength training. Work opposite muscle groups to prevent muscle imbalances. Ex: quads and Hammies. Triceps and biceps. Chest and back... you get the picture. If you’re working the front, work the back. A push exercise and a pull exercise. Make sense?

But how many reps/sets?
This can vary but in general I like to stay in the 8 rep range. A good rule of thumb is that your last two reps should be difficult. If it’s too easy add weight or add some reps.
Sets:
STRENGTH = fewer sets
SIZE = more sets
So if you wanna get swole 😉 go for 4-5 sets
If you wanna get strong go for 1-2
If you wanna be rebellious just do three. 🤣

Then finish off with a metabolic conditioner. I like to mix and match and have fun here! I usually go with one exercise with resistance, one cardio or plyo type of exercise and one body weight exercise. I like to keep these relatively short... maybe 20 minutes tops. If you want a rest 3:1 is a good work to rest ratio. Ex: work for three minutes rest for one.
This is just a basic approach... no scientific studies were performed for the making of this post. 😜

Personal trainers are awesome... I’ve been lucky enough to have so many brilliant and talented trainers that have helped inspire and teach me. Am I going to tell you that you cannot achieve your goals without a trainer? No way! Some people are extremely self motivated and google is full of knowledge and IG is full of trainers offering advice.... but being a personal trainer, surprise- I’m here to tell you why you should hire a trainer! 😉 1. Accountability: we all work harder when we’re being watched by people, right? Now imagine having someone pushing you through your whole workout- yeah, you’d probably work pretty hard. 2. Knowledge: everybody is different. A trainer can help you with your specific needs and goals. Weight loss? Training for a marathon? Needing strength back after an injury? A personal trainer has the proper training and knowledge to help with any of those. 3. No wasted time: maximize your results! Instead of running on the treadmill for about 10 minutes and then maybe do a few squats or bicep curls, your trainer will have a specific workout and plan in mind! Let’s be honest- walking into a gym is intimidating enough... wouldn’t it be nice to have someone tell you what to do? Yes it would. I could keep going, but I think you get it... hiring a personal trainer is always a good idea if you are serious about reaching your fitness goals. Besides... trainers always have your back! See what I did there?! 😜

Post run selfie with my boy! Did you know kids need 60 minutes of exercise EVERYDAY??? It’s true! So many diseases that come to our attention in adulthood (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even some cancers 😱) are actually years in the making. Let’s give our kids their best shot at a healthy life! Encourage them to get outside! It doesn’t have to be an organized sport or fitness activity for them to reap the benefits of physical activity. Just get those kiddos moving! 💪🏼

Last night was my first session with the cutest mother/son duo ever. Some days you’re reminded why you do what you do and yesterday was one of them. Hi I’m Hilary and I have no New Year’s resolutions. I plan on staying the sarcastic, always hand standing, 5 minutes late to everything, too much ice cream eating and needs to wash her hair girl that I am. If I wanted to change I would. I’m not going to change just because a date on my calendar tells me to. If you’re planning on starting a fitness program (or any resolution really) dig deep and find your “why”- or else it just wont stick! So, while New Years might be a good time for some self reflection, please don’t just make a goal for the sake of making one. Make it something that matters, something you really want and have a plan! Also, if you fail in the first week, remember you don’t need a new year to change, tomorrow is always a new day! 🤜🏼🤛🏼

A lot of people will be starting a workout program in the new year. Please please please DO NOT get discouraged when the number on the scale goes up when you start exercising. This happens for a few reasons:

1. Your muscles need extra energy now that you’re working out. Your body provides this energy by storing more glycogen (sugar) to fuel your muscles. The glycogen binds with water... so what you’re seeing go up on the scale is what’s commonly known as water weight. Over time your muscles will become more efficient and need less glycogen for fuel.
2. Your muscles are inflamed and small tears can develop in them. Your body responds to this by retaining water. Give it time... make exercise your routine and in a few weeks the muscle inflammation will subside along with water retention.
3. You’re hungry and eating more! Moving more is making you hungry. Just remember the key to fat loss is to burn more calories than you consume. So, if you’re trying to lose weight stick to whole nutritious foods that are more filling than junk. Also, make sure you’re getting plenty of protein and water. You should be drinking half of your body weight in ounces in water everyday.

Just as you didn’t gain the weight in a week or two, you won’t lose it in a week or two. Time and consistency folks. The two magic ingredients. I promise you will see results if you’re consistent and give it reasonable time. You got this. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
