What is stress? We talk about it all the time… but WHAT the heck is it really?!

Stress is your body's reaction to pressure from a certain situation or event. There are many types. Examples:

🔹 emotional + mental: pressure at work, financial strain, a fight with a loved one or disagreement with someone on your team, and oh yeah… a pandemic!

🔹 physical: working at a desk, driving a car, sitting at a computer, playing sports, an injury

🔹 chemical: everything you eat and you put in and on your body, a lot of which has toxins and pollutants (food, beauty products/toiletries, cleaning products, and our environments overall)

So many day-to-day occurrences cause stress, and all of these stressors add up.

Imagine a bucket where each stressor becomes a drop of water inside. Eventually, that bucket is going to overflow. The result? Your body gets more locked into survival mode, which is a stressed state. It’s a vicious cycle!

Besides caffeine, what gives you a boost? I think it’s so important to not rely on coffee or energy drinks to give you the extra push you need to make it to the end of the day (though I DO love a good coffee!)

Something that gives me an instant energy boost is a good workout. Even if I came in a little sleep, I always leave feeling better than when I walked in.

What’s your un-caffeinated pick-me-up?

Did you know having a bedtime routine is SO important (but not what is stated in this meme!) Sleep hygiene is so important! Here are a few tips:

👉🏻Turn off screens at least 1 hour before bed.
👉🏻Sip on chamomile, lavender or any other calming tea.
👉🏻Take a bath with calming essential oils (lavendar)
👉🏻Read a book.
👉🏻Stretch, meditate or do gentle yoga.

3 Signs Your Thyroid Might Be Affecting Your Period:

1. Heavy flow. Having low thyroid production influences the body's ability to make progesterone, therefore, creating an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone.

2. Irregular Cycles. Too little thyroid hormone can cause and over-production of prolactin which can inhibit ovulation. No ovulation = no progesterone = very irregular cycles or no cycle at all.

3. PCOS or fibroids. If you have been diagnosed with PCOS or fibroids, chances are your thyroid is involved. These diagnoses also cause reduced fertility.

Have any of these symptoms? When was the last time you had a comprehensive look at your thyroid?

There are the foundations of health. The basics that need to be in place first before true healing can begin.

Before I jump straight to balancing hormones, I first make sure all of this is in balance:

👉🏻Are you sleeping?
👉🏻Are you pooping?
👉🏻How is your diet?
👉🏻How is your mental health?
👉🏻Are you drinking enough water?

These foundations might seem obvious, but women after women in my office don't even have 25% of these in check. The above 👆🏻are most definitely affecting your hormones so if you have been to a doctor and told your labs were 'normal' let's take a dive deeper into these foundations. This is root cause medicine.

I grew up an Army brat--a daughter of a now retired Colonel in the U.S. Army. Although an Arizona native, I grew up outside of Washington D.C. and spent most of my younger years living in Virginia and Missouri.

In 1992, I finally was able to call Arizona my home where I attended high school and received my Bachelor’s degree in business from Arizona State University.

My pre-doctor work life consisted of restaurant management, bartending and serving for nearly 20 years, but life quickly changed in my early 30s.

In 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 31. I never thought in a million years I would have been diagnosed with cancer at such a young age, but it was the turning point in my life. To say I was scared was an understatement, but it honestly was the defining moment in my life. I always wanted to be a doctor, but gave up on those dreams because I was sick of being in school, and instead worked in the bar and restaurants, but always knew I could do and be more. After 6 rounds of chemotherapy, a positive attitude with a side of determination and sass I became a survivor.
