What can you expect when navigating health decisions for your children? Many parents have so many questions about treatments, vaccines, puberty questions. It is hard to know if a provider will be able
Well-known pediatrician and leading ethicist Dr. Ashley Fernandes recently outlined how the concept of social justice applies to pediatric medicine in a plenary lecture at the annual Catholic Medical Association conference. He gives a framework for describing how an excellent pediatric practice can ensure the health and well-being of the child within the family. These are principles put into practice here at Morning Star Pediatrics from its inception and guarantee that you will receive excellent, ethical and compassionate medical care.
Dr. Fernandes noted that the “family is the first place for nurturing and decision-making for the child.” The role of the pediatrician is “not to arrogantly usurp parental authority,” but instead to “actively partner with parents and the family to ensure the values and priorities of the family is respected and not replaced.” Our nurse practitioner, Dana Rodriguez, PNP, does just that while caring for her patients.
The other mark of authentic pediatric medicine, according to Dr. Fernandes, is to be in solidarity with the child by seeing the child as a person of equal dignity to ourselves, “regardless of state of dependence, immaturity, physical illness or mental disability.” Similarly, Morning Star recognizes “the dignity of each boy and girl as a unique creation of God and seeks to support them as they develop into adults.”
We are pleased to have the solid foundation of our practice affirmed in such a prominent way. We look forward to serving you and your children sometime soon at Morning Star Pediatrics.

Meet Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Dana Rodriguez!
“It is with great excitement that I look forward to serving the local community and partnering with parents in the health of their children.” - Dana Rodriguez
We will open our pediatric office on October 1, 2019.
Dana was born and raised in Wisconsin. She first attended the University of Wisconsin La-Crosse where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish. From there she felt a calling to serve others, especially children, so she returned to school and earned her master’s of science in nursing degree in 2006 from Marquette University of Milwaukee and became a certified pediatric nurse practitioner. She later went on to earn her PhD in nursing from Marquette University where she served as a research assistant for the Institute of Natural Family Planning and studied the Marquette Method. She has been a clinical instructor for Marquette University as well as an adjunct professor for University of Phoenix. Dana worked in private practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner for several years and then started a school-based health clinic at St. Anthony School of Milwaukee, a school of 2,000 children in one of Milwaukee’s most medically underserved neighborhoods. She and her family moved to Arizona in 2016 and she worked the past few years in Maricopa and Casa Grande at a rural community health center. She is passionate about partnering with parents to meet the healthcare needs of their children. Dana and her husband Zeus were married in 2005. Dana, Zeus, and their children attend St. Anne’s parish.

We are also very happy to announce that we will be expanding and opening a brand new pediatric office on October 1, 2019. Pediatric nurse practitioner, Dana Rodriguez will be providing care in the new office. The mission of Morning Star Pediatrics is to provide excellent, ethical and compassionate medical care for children. We promote the dignity and well-being of each child by partnering with parents to provide care that respects the whole person: mind, body and spirit.
Here is what Dr. Clint Leonard, owner and president of Morning Star OB/GYN, had to say when asked about the news of the addition to his current office and the expansion of the pediatrics office:
“They are great blessings: To be able to expand Morning Star OB/GYN to include an experienced, Napro-trained female OB/GYN physician to our team both to broaden the surgical expertise in the office and to provide much-needed call support for laboring patients at the hospital. To be able to meet the increasing demand of East Valley families for high-quality, dependable pediatric services in line with the professional and ethical standards they have come to expect from our practice. I can’t wait for Dr. Kreller and Dana to start!” - Clinton Leonard, MD
