Asthma Athletics Asthma Athletics is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the education and athletic training for as The program lasts for 1 month.

Swim Program-

Asthma Athletics Swim Programs have taken place throughout Phoenix and surrounding cities since August 2002. Swim partners have included the YMCA, Banner/Carodon Childrens Hospital and Swim Kids USA. Both the children and parents are encouraged to participate. Each visit begins with a check in, where children learn to use peak flow meters. An Asthma Lesson follows, which lasts 30-45

minutes. during this lesson children and parents learn an aspect of asthma care. Various asthma topics are addressed and later enforced with games. The swim lessons are lead by qualified swim instructors. As the children are participating in the swim lesson, parents meet with volunteer health care providers who offer asthma education. In order to get the most out of the program, the parents and child should make sure they are able to attend all 4 sessions of the program. These programs will be held throughout the year.

The New Asthma

”When asthma is not well controlled, repeated asthma attacks may contribute to further reduced lung function. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that 75% of more than 1,000 children ages 5 to 11 developed lower-than-normal lung function by adulthood. And 11 percent of them had lung function equivalent to that of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease — a condition most often associated with lifelong cigarette smoking.”.

Learn why controlling asthma is more involved than treating the attacks.

Creeping through a haunted house may be scary fun, but a visit can cause real-life fright if your child can’t breathe easily. Excitement and anxiety can sometimes trigger asthma. Running from house to house in search of treats can also trigger symptoms. If your child has asthma or exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) be sure they carry emergency medicine, such as a quick-relief inhaler, and use it regularly as prescribed to prevent symptoms.

Learn more about what is Exercise Induced Asthma is & how to manage it.

Exercise can cause shortness of breath in anyone. Airflow obstruction that occurs because of exercise is exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). An older term for this condition is exercise-induced asthma. This term wrongly suggests that exercise causes asthma. As many as 90 percent of all people who have asthma will experience symptoms of EIB during exercise. For teenagers and young adults, this may be the most common cause of asthma symptoms. To learn more about EIB go to: http://www.aafa.org/page/exercise-induced-asthma.aspx

If You Have Asthma, You Need to Take Steps to Fight the Flu

Everyone with who is six months and older should get a flu vaccine to protect against getting the flu.

Vaccination is the first and most important step in protecting against influenza. Even if you don’t have a regular doctor or nurse, you can get a flu vaccine.

Flu vaccines are offered in many locations including doctors’ offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies, college health centers and increasingly by a number of employers and public schools.

Which flu vaccine should people with asthma get?
Flu shots (made with inactivated (killed) flu virus) are approved for use in people 6 months and older regardless of whether or not they have asthma or other health conditions. The flu shot has a long established safety record in people with asthma.
The nasal spray vaccine is approved for use in people 2 through 49 years of age. However, for the 2016-17 season, it is recommended that the nasal spray vaccine not be used because of concerns about its effectiveness in recent seasons.
Pneumococcal infections are a serious complication of influenza infections and can cause death. Pneumococcal vaccines may be given at the same time as influenza vaccine.

When should you call 911 for an adult or child having an asthma attack?

If quick-relief medicine (also called rescue or fast-acting medicine ex. albuterol or xopenex is being used repeatedly for asthma flare-up symptoms with no relief of wheezing/chest tightness/ trouble breathing/cough.
If no relief after 5 or 10 minutes or if symptoms returns again quickly - call 911

If there are changes in your child or adults color, like bluish or gray or pale lips or fingernails or pale face

If they are having trouble talking

If the areas below the ribs, between the ribs or in the neck visibly pull in during inhalation (called retractions)

If peak flow reading falls below 50% (which is in the red zone of the peak flow) and doesn't improve after using your reliever medicine.

Most patients with asthma do not die at the emergency room, they unfortunately die at home or in a car on the way to ED - playing safe is best for an asthma attack emergency by calling 911.

Every second counts when oxygen is unable to reach your brain!

Thank you for sharing this important education tip!
