We are often asked what is the difference between an Athletic Trainer, Physical Therapist, Chiropractor, and Personal Trainer?

While our roles may overlap, each brings unique strengths to the table!

Athletic Trainers (ATs) bridge the gap between injury prevention, clinical care, rehabilitation, and performance. We evaluate injuries, address movement limitations, guide recovery, and help people stay healthy and ready for the demands of their work and daily lives.

But the best care doesn’t happen in a silo. Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Personal Trainers, and Athletic Trainers each bring valuable expertise. When we work together, we can create a more comprehensive approach to health, recovery, and long-term function.

At HUMATIX, we believe in meeting people where they are, connecting the dots in their care, and helping them move forward with confidence. Because better outcomes happen when we work together.

HUMATIX was founded with a simple belief: people deserve access to healthcare professionals who understand the physical demands of their daily lives and can help them stay healthy, capable, and prepared for what matters most.

As an Athletic Trainer, healthcare provider, and CEO of HUMATIX, Ken Follett spent nearly a decade working in athletics, rehabilitation, and industrial settings. Throughout his career, he witnessed firsthand the impact that proactive injury prevention, movement education, and performance-focused healthcare can have on a person’s quality of life. Yet he also noticed a significant gap. Many hardworking professionals, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, public safety personnel, and industrial workers, often lacked access to healthcare providers who understood the unique physical demands of their jobs.

Ken’s passion for human performance and injury prevention began as a high school athlete and ultimately led him to pursue a degree in Athletic Training from Grand Valley State University as a non-traditional student. It was through his work with tactical and public safety professionals that he discovered his purpose.

Alongside Ken, his wife Tara helped shape the heart and culture of HUMATIX. With a background in early childhood development, education, community engagement, and digital marketing, Tara brings a unique perspective centered on relationships, accessibility, and serving people where they are. Her years working with children, families, and school communities reinforced a belief that meaningful change happens when people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Together, Ken and Tara built HUMATIX to shine a light on the incredible value Athletic Trainers bring to healthcare while making those services more accessible to underserved populations. Their vision extends beyond injury care. HUMATIX focuses on educating tactical athletes, first responders, industrial employees, and active individuals about their health, movement, recovery, and long-term wellness.

What does an Athletic Trainer actually do when they’re embedded with a fire department?

A little bit of everything.

An AT can be there to assess aches and pains before they become bigger problems, improve mobility and strength, support physical testing, participate in department trainings, and help firefighters stay physically prepared for the demands of the job.

It’s about meeting firefighters where they are, addressing issues early, and connecting movement, health, and performance to the work they actually do.

Because duty readiness starts long before the call comes in.

This is Athletic Training. This is HUMATIX.

So…what exactly does an Athletic Trainer do?

Athletic Trainers are healthcare professionals who specialize in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and conditions that affect movement and physical function.

We assess how the body is moving, identify injury risks, provide therapeutic interventions, develop individualized rehabilitation programs, and help people safely return to the activities that matter to them.

And Athletic Training isn’t just for athletes…
ATs work with firefighters, law enforcement, industrial workers, tactical professionals, performing artists, and active populations to help prevent injuries, improve physical function, and support long-term health and performance.

At HUMATIX, we believe Athletic Training is about more than treating an injury after it happens. It’s about meeting people where they are, understanding the demands of what they do, and helping them stay capable of doing it.

Prevent. Evaluate. Treat. Rehab. Educate. Perform.

Motion Meets Purpose.

Today we worked on box jumps. Box jumps are excellent for training because they develop explosive lower-body power, build fast-twitch muscle fibers, and improve vertical jump height.

Prep for taping season?

This is what happens when our teenager takes over socials.

It’s hard to know what’s going through a firefighter’s mind, but if I had to guess…

I’d say they’re deeply committed to taking care of both their mental and physical well-being. It’s been inspiring to witness that commitment firsthand.
