Wow. Time flies that’s for sure.
6 years ago yesterday was my first day back at school to become a Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist. 🥹 What started out as a back-up plan for being a Physical Therapist Assistant quickly turned into a perfect career for me. The opportunity to blend my favorite part of both worlds. Work with people that truly want to feel better in a much more relaxing environment. Provide care in a way that truly makes a difference & aligns with my values + passions.

Since then I have worked on 625 different bodies 😳 - that’s WILD! + Attended over 250 hours of CEU’s to advance my education in the more medical/therapeutic world of massage & bodywork. Thank you to those of you that have been with me from the beginning when I was just figuring it all out. We all sure have been through a lot of seasons of life together and I appreciate you taking the chance on me and Align Bodywork 💛💛

Cupping Therapy/Myofascial Decompression (MFD) >>> Love it!! & often super beneficial when the body just isn’t responding the way I am asking it to. Cue: introduce a novel stimulus to that targeted area that gets your brain curious.

Cupping is different then most modalities because, instead of like so many of the others that are applying pressure downward, it creates a suction to lift and separate the tissues which helps bring in blood flow and allows said tissues to glide and slide over each other — especially when we are doing some passive/active movement with it. That’s the ultimate goal! Super common for tissues to get “sticky” like that from injury & repetitive uses so we want to get them all moving nicely again with each other and remind the body/nervous system it is safe to move in such a way 😌

Frequency of bodywork appointments is very specific to the season of life you’re in, the demands (physical and mental!) that you’re putting your body through, and what you are doing for it on your own on a regular basis. Initially appointments typically are closer together if we are working on some specific troublesome areas but I’m working to spread those appointments out as quickly as we can. As people become more in tune with their body, it becomes clearer the frequency there body will require to keep feeling it’s best while going through all the life demands. Ultimately, those that reap the best benefits are the ones that find a consistent routine vs just reaching out every 6 months or so and after something has already been flared up for a couple months.

Throwing it back today to how I used to post. All things wellness aka a rambling of words of what’s been on my mind lately.

“Trust your gut instinct.”

Throughout life a lot of us lose the ability to listen to what our body is telling us and stop trusting our gut instinct. I did. Whether we were conditioned to override the thought because that’s what society tells us, perhaps we were bullied/criticized for decisions time and time again that we feel like we probably are just wrong, we just never developed the skill because someone just always jumped in to do it for us, or some other reason.

& I’m not saying to just back away when something gets tough right away. Or back away just because a challenge seems daunting. I’m saying a sign/behavior is repeatedly (2-3x is enough) popping up, you keep hitting the road block, or you just feel it in your bones some situation is just not right.

In a simple sense ~ I’ve gotten it a few times out running on a trail. Something just suddenly felt off about the environment/energy. & therefore I leave it and run somewhere more public. The hardest one for me though personally is in the life decision making realm. It’s a skill I lost growing up and have been actively working on improving it over the last several years. Especially the last couple after I failed miserably to honor the gut feelings for months in a situation and my body physically paid the price after being in a chronic, not-listened to stressed out state mentally for so long. NGL, a lot of chronic pains and health issues have pretty solid evidence supporting that behavior, a lack of listening & identifying the signs, being an etiology.

Our bodies & subconscious really have a fantastic way of communicating what is meant for us and what isn’t. If we are open to listening and seeing the signs, they will present themselves.

Initial appointments always start with us chatting a bit about what you have going on, expect out of the appointment, and what modalities you prefer. I feel like this is the response I get most often 😆

1 year ago I completed the week long training + certification for Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) (Vodder technique) & it has been such an excellent complement to the work I do.

MLD facials have honestly become one of my favorites to do. Post-surgical MLD coming in second. + so many more applications - these have just been extra fun for me. Both incredibly satisfying to watch the tissue texture and tone change with such a light touch and the visual results are awesome as the puffiness/inflammation reduces in such a short amount of time. Prior to this training I would not have been able to do much with muscle work to address sinus pressure/congestion, reduced hearing + headaches in relation to inflammation, immediate post surgical swelling & pain reduction, etc but this is just another toolkit in the toolbox to help facilitate your body to healing and feeling better.

A FAQ — you do not need to necessarily choose MLD vs traditional bodywork when scheduling with me. The cost is the same. It’s purely the time constraint we are working with in most cases. Appointments are always tailored to you and your individual needs on that given day. I often am doing a 90min session with some of it bodywork and then an area of MLD, or 1 area of targeted bodywork with a full body MLD, etc.

Headaches 🤕

Massage therapy is not always the solution to relief, but definitely has potential to depending on the etiology for them. How do we know the etiology? I can’t tell you that unfortunately, but a few consistent appointments will at least help you gauge if maybe some muscle work is what you need instead of daily medications. Sometimes headaches can be more hormonal or environmental related, but even then manual work can help tone them down. If you’re someone that deals with it regularly, that glimmer of relief is still monumental.

What can I do for them? Meticulous trigger point work through the neck, upper back and scalp muscles to locate and release trigger points, regain proper muscle length-tension relationships, & of course just providing a low-stimulation/relaxing environment. The trigger points are either felt locally or referring up into the forehead, behind the eyes, and around the jaw. Once released, & if needed retrained to no longer find that area threatening, is when longer lasting relief can occur if that indeed is the source for the pain. I do also like to finish it up with some manual lymphatic drainage work too to assist with lymphatic flow through the neck/head if time allows. Tight muscles 🤝 reduced fluid flow = tension headaches

I’m not saying stretching doesn’t work ever. Sometimes it’s enough. But if that same tightness just keeps coming back or it only dulls briefly from the stretching, you probably need something different and more precise that truly addresses what is going on.
