What an incredible group of public safety professionals!
EmCare Training & Services would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended Medical Mind of a Dispatcher. The participation, discussions, experience, and willingness to be challenged made this training exactly what it was designed to be.
A very special thank you to Wayne Police Department for welcoming us and providing the opportunity to bring this program to their agency.
We would also like to recognize and thank North Caldwell Police Department, Princeton Police Department, Stanford Police Department, and Newton Police Department for entrusting EmCare Training with members of their communications teams and helping make this training such a success.
Medical Mind of a Dispatcher was developed by Scot Sorensen around an important concept: a dispatcher shouldn't simply hear the words being spoken, they should learn to recognize the medical story developing behind those words.
EmCare Training partnered with Scot to bring that concept to life through realistic 9-1-1 simulations, interactive scenarios, and real-world decision-making. Participants weren't simply told what to look for. They had to hear it, recognize it, question it, and make decisions while the call was unfolding.
And some of those calls were designed to challenge exactly that.
A caller describing someone who was suddenly acting drunk, confused, and combative required dispatchers to look beyond the behavior and recognize the possibility of a stroke.
Another caller reported that he had been “hit” and there was blood everywhere. Through careful questioning and environmental clues — including a faint horn in the background — the larger picture of a motorcycle crash began to emerge.
Throughout the course, participants worked through calls involving medical emergencies, altered mental status, trauma, language barriers, subtle background clues, incomplete information, misleading initial complaints, and situations where the first thing the caller said was not necessarily the real emergency.
That is the heart of Medical Mind of a Dispatcher, learning to listen differently, ask better questions, recognize what may be hiding beneath the surface, and understand just how much the information gathered in those first few minutes can impact the responders heading to the scene.
To everyone who attended: thank you for the work you do every day and for investing in becoming even stronger public safety communicators.
And we're just getting started.
Be on the lookout for EmCare Training's 2027 training schedule. We're already looking ahead to new classes, additional locations, and more opportunities to bring realistic, engaging, and challenging public safety communications training to agencies throughout the region.
2027 is going to be a big year for EmCare Training we hope to see you in the classroom.
