Oh my goodness, where does one even start with this birth.
This mom in 2024 was the second birth I EVER attended, and the first portfolio labor I did (meaning we traded pictures for business use). She labored for super long, had a c-section (and a very cute little boy), and left her birth feeling a little down about it going different than planned.
Fast forward this year, I’m no longer in Kansas, I have my own baby, we are really great friends, and she says “I’m pregnant!!! I want you to be my doula!” I was super excited for her and she was super excited for her TOLAC, hopeful VBAC.
We spent months prepping, preparing, talking, processing, etc. Finally, she went into labor!
Of course, because I couldn’t be there in person, we did a lot of virtual support and even arranged for her mom (who used to be a professional photographer) to take pictures during her birth (something her mom had never done before).
Mom labored to 10cm unmedicated, pushed for a bit, decided to get the epidural, rested, and eventually had to battle with a swollen cervix. After trying several things, mom and dad decided to do a c-section and meet their baby girl.
When we talked about her labor and birth after, she couldn’t stop saying how she had so much fun and felt so happy, proud, and how even though she had a sunroof baby—she had a positive experience.
I can’t take credit for that. She did so much prep on her own to make sure that if she did have a c/s, she would feel at peace knowing she exhausted literally every option.
Surgical birth is not the enemy. Being uninformed, unwilling to adapt, and stubborn (not in the good way in birth) is what sets you up to have a less than positive experience. Mentally preparing and knowing you have options, informed consent, and you are the deciding factor helps prep your brain for the changes that will occur during your birth.
Birth never goes according to plan. Plans never go according to birth. And yet, when you are educated and put in the work, your birth will go according to your informed decisions.
Well done, mama!!
