Today is the day we pay tribute to the high spirits of laborers who work hard everyday.
Happy Labor Day to all of our volunteers.
Our volunteers are hard at work at our back to school clinics, making sure that everyone is healthy and ready to take on the '22-'23 school year! Best wishes to all the kids heading back to school!
A few of our MRC volunteers did a great job representing us at the "We Care" festival! They played a game called "Prepardy" (similar to Jeopardy; they quizzed people's knowledge on emergency preparedness), and talked to people about making their own kits and plans!
Join us tomorrow for our monthly meeting. See you then!
Let's beat the heat together! If you need to escape the extreme heat, our libraries have AC. Hanover libraries will be open through the weekend (Sunday too) to offer a spot to cool off. Here's some good safety tips too.
On this day 20 years ago, the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) program was created to provide a way to recruit, train, and activate medical and public health professionals and additional types of volunteers to respond to community health needs. After the 9/11 tragedy, President Bush called upon all Americans during his January 2002 State of the Union Address to help others through volunteering. Through the creation of the MRC, volunteers are able to augment existing services in the community and support local public health and medical entities, as well as emergency management agencies. The MRC started with 42 community-based units and has grown to almost 800 units with over 300,000 volunteers.
Happy Birthday, MRC!
We hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July.
We had an amazing time at The Special Olympics last Saturday, we partnered with Greater Richmond and Chesterfield MRC to help at The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Center. We provided blood pressure screening, Height and Weight screening, Nutrition and Health education, and more. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who made this event a success! "Serving in the MRC gives me a real way to help the community when help is needed. I'm not rich, so I can't make meaningful financial donations, but I can lend a hand; and that's meaningful too.” -Sherrill Kauffman
Last, but certainly not least, we want to highlight our indoor traffic volunteers! They make sure patients know how to navigate the hallways of our clinics, which vaccinator to go to, and where to wait their 15 minutes at the end! Thank you!
Don't forget to join us at 1pm for our celebration event!
We can't forget about the volunteers who have helped with adverse monitoring! They make sure our patients have all important information after their vaccine and that they are feeling well before we send them on their way.
“Being part of MRC has been a way of helping others during COVID. I loved every time I volunteered, meeting and helping the people who came.” -V.B.
“Let’s face it: there’s nothing better than helping people in need and the MRC is the epitome of helping those in need. I will never forget the look of gratitude and joy on those about to get a shot in the arm! — Go Figure — But that’s just a small part — I truly get back more than I give.” -Arax Boghosian
It's still National Volunteer Week, but it's also ! We are grateful for our volunteers every day, but here is a special shoutout to all of the volunteers that have helped at our testing events! They were the first volunteers to step up and help during the pandemic!

“After leaving full time employment joining the MRC afforded me the opportunity to continue serving the community. The ability to choose the extent of my involvement was helpful. I have found it to be very organized with competent and friendly staff. The training is excellent and meets the needs of the members in serving the population of Virginia. Our goal through the pandemic has been met with great success in many areas.” -C.B.
“I appreciate what the volunteers do to assist the health department in promoting the health of our community and I’m honored to be part of it.” --Dr. Levin
Who are the first volunteers you meet at our clinics? Our Super Screeners!! They have made sure that everyone coming to get a vaccine are feeling healthy and excited to be there!
“Volunteering is one way to help the community during the pandemic. Being part of MRC afforded that opportunity and enjoyed making some friends. The leadership is great.” -Esther Harlfinger

This coming Thursday (4/21), check out the Henrico County and the Richmond City Health District pages at 10:30am! They are beginning their online press conference with a shout out to the MRC 🙂 So well deserved! We love you, MRC volunteers!

Did you know that we have over 400 COVID-19 vaccinators in the Greater Richmond MRC Unit? They have helped give over 300,000 COVID vaccines to our community! Thank you, Valiant Vaccinators!
"I happened into volunteering with MRC because of the COVID pandemic; I’m so glad I did. It is a privilege to serve the community in a time of need, working with others to save lives and prevent illness; and an opportunity to learn. In the midst of crisis, volunteering with MRC gave me a purpose and hope to those we served."--Anonymous
“I joined MRC because I wanted to contribute more to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Through MRC, I not only get to experience the medical field firsthand, but I know I am having a positive impact on my community. I found a passion working with a variety of patients as well as being able to practice speaking in a different language. I am thrilled to be able to work alongside healthcare workers, and as a student, their advice has been invaluable in allowing me to approach my academics more strategically and one day becoming an exceptional physician myself.” –Max Rackly

Travel Plans for the Holiday Weekend? Please be ...
As many are making plans now for what they'll do over the long weekend, the Virginia State Police is advising everyone to be weather aware and factor in how the pending winter storm can/will impact those travel plans.
As of today, the weather forecasts have all regions of Virginia being affected by varying combinations of precipitation starting late Saturday, Jan. 15, and continuing through Sunday, Jan. 16. This winter storm system is also expected to impact much of the East Coast, especially along the I-95 corridor - for those who may be traveling out of or returning to Virginia over the weekend.
For the latest on this weather system and to help Virginians plan ahead, please visit any one of the following National Weather Service websites:
https://weather.gov/ covers the US
https://weather.gov/akq Central and Southeast VA
https://weather.gov/lwx Northern VA and Northern Mountains
https://weather.gov/rnk Western VA
The Virginia State Police is currently preparing for this latest round of winter weather and will have all available troopers on patrol in order to respond as quickly as possible to traffic crashes, emergencies and disabled motorists.
VSP is advising folks to delay/avoid travel during the storm. But, If you must travel, then please take these safety tips into consideration:
- Know Before You Go! Before heading out, check Virginia road conditions at www.511virginia.org or download the VDOT 511 app.
- Clear ALL snow and ice from the roof, trunk, hood and windows of your vehicle - car, SUV, minivan, pickup truck, commercial vehicle - before you travel.
- Drive for conditions - slow your speed and increase your traveling distance between the vehicle ahead of you. Always buckle up. Avoid distractions - put down the phone.
- Use your headlights - in rain AND snow. Virginia law requires headlights on when your wipers are active.
- Do not call 911 or #77 for road conditions. Please leave these emergency lines open for emergencies only.
- Bring with you snacks, water, cell phone charger, warm blanket(s), and any medications you might need.
- Be sure your vehicle has a fuel tank of gas, and is in good working condition.
