COVID-19 Vaccination

The following is a COVID update, with details on the latest developments regarding booster vaccines for the immunocompromised and the general public. We’ll continue to keep you posted as the news evolves. We ask that if you are scheduled for an office appointment or a lab draw and you are experiencing any cold or allergy-like symptoms, please call us so Dr. Kaneriya and Dr. Marathe can discuss how best to help you and keep our office and patients safe.

Who is currently eligible for a third COVID shot?

The CDC recently recommended a third dose of either Moderna or Pfizer vaccine for moderately to severely immunosuppressed patients. Please note, this group as defined represents just 3% of the American adult population, including people who have:

- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Where can I get a third dose of the vaccine if I’m immunocompromised?

Local pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, are offering the vaccine with same-day appointments or on a walk-in basis. Patients will need to bring their vaccination card and attest to their eligibility. You do not need a note or a prescription from your doctor! To find the closest location for your particular booster, please visit the Vaccine Finder Website (Link # 2), type in your zip code and choose the vaccine that you received initially.

If I’m eligible for the third dose now, which vaccine should I get? The current recommendation is to obtain a third dose of the vaccine series that you were given initially.

What if I received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine? Currently, there is no formal recommendation for additional shots for those who received the J&J vaccine; however, new guidelines are expected to be announced in the next few weeks.

What is the difference between this third dose and a booster shot? A booster shot is given when the initial, sufficient immune response to a primary vaccine series wanes over time. The COVID booster vaccines are also being fine-tuned to protect against new variants that are circulating. Immunocompromised patients, who were not sufficiently protected by the initial two doses, are being offered a third shot to stimulate their immune system and create more antibodies. The third shot is identical to the others, and is considered part of the initial COVID vaccine series for this high-risk group.

Are booster shots necessary for others?

While the level of protection remains high for those who have been fully vaccinated, it is expected that booster shots will be authorized for individuals last vaccinated more than 8 months ago. This will likely be offered first to the elderly and healthcare workers, and extended to the general population afterwards. Official recommendations will follow and we will keep you up to date.

For young adults leaving for college for the first time, August is a time for excitement and hope, yet also trepidation and anxiety. And then layer COVID part #2 on top....uggh. But wait! There are many resources out there, some free (at least initially) and readily accessible online. Keep these in your back pocket and be ready to reach for them. Realize that any change can create stress, even temporary, and that stress can be a normal and a necessary part of life. It also can be due to factors that are not normal so please reach out for help! The stigma behind the mental health curtain is slowly being lifted, and we all need to make an effort to ask for assistance when we're not in the right mental space.

Real is an online therapy start up that is offering a month of free online group sessions as well as one-on-one appointments. After that, the monthly fee is equivalent to 3 cups of coffee from Starbucks!

Check out the links below for additional mental health resources that are either free or low cost for those going to college or already in the thick of it. Please know that we are always here for our patients, and are happy to guide them on their mental health journey.

Now that vaccination rates are rising, we want our patients to continue to stay healthy. Resuming your regular healthcare exams and screenings is an extremely important step in doing so. Our office is open and ready to help you schedule your annual exam. We are still taking precautions with our plastic barriers, sanitizing protocols, and mask requirements.

A study performed by Cancer.Org showed the negative impact that COVID-19 had on cancer screenings. One finding reported an
estimated 80% to 90% decline in screening for breast,
colorectal, and cervical cancers among a patient
population during March and April of 2020 compared
to the same time period in 2019. These numbers have only slightly risen by June 2020, but not yet back to pre-pandemic levels. The ramifications of these missed screenings are still unknown, but it is hypothesized that it will result in critical health consequences, measurable in a few years.

We ask that patients do not continue to delay their annual visit to their doctors' office. Contact our team today to schedule your exam!

SHOP | Beggs Bold Blends Seasonings | Cooking Lessons with Jennifer Beggs

Our doctors always encourage our patients to make small changes to their diets in order to eat a little healthier everyday. Which is why we were excited to hear about some low-sodium seasonings, recommended by one of our patients. The company is locally based and also offers free shipping!

Many patients don't realize how much sodium they're consuming in a day. High sodium foods can cause bloating, frequent headaches and high blood pressure - just to name a few! A little packet of taco seasoning at your local grocery store contains an average of 350 - 575mg of hidden sodium! Compared to Beggs Bold Blends Taco Seasoning, which only contains 95mg per serving.

Her website also includes healthy recipe ideas for days when you need some inspiration: https://cookinglessonswithjenniferbeggs.com/spice-shop/

Feel free to comment with some of your favorite healthy recipes!

We here at Lifetime Internal Medicine are cautiously optimistic about the relaxation of mask guidelines for vaccinated individuals by the CDC; it means that we will be able to get back to a sense of normalcy at some point.

However, masks are still required in a healthcare setting, and the office will continue to follow this recommendation. We ask that patients help keep our staff and other patients safe by continuing to wear a mask in our building and at your appointments.

Thank you for your continued diligence in keeping us and the rest of our community safe!
