This STILL blows my mind.

“All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four-month-old fetus in the womb of her mother. This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother. Each of us spent five months in our grandmother’s womb, and she in turn formed in the womb of her grandmother. We vibrate to the rhythm of our mother’s blood before she herself is born, and this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother.”

Whoa.

ABM’s Melissa Bartick & Cecília Tomori blog on SIDS and social determinants of health.

“Does the US have the political will to prevent its own infants from dying? This is something that goes far beyond individual mothers’ or health care providers. Larger solutions regarding income inequality, universal health insurance, and paid family leave, as well as repairing the legacies of historical trauma are needed.”

Tongue tie Australia

There’s a lot of talk about tongue tie. Know where to find good resources.

“You can’t do a randomised study on tongue tie release, it’s unethical”.

There are 5 such studies.

And when pooled together, what did they find?

No consistent improvement in breastfeeding.

Minimal and short term improvement in nipple pain.

Now there are definitely improvements to be had, we know that. But tongue tie release is not the magic bullet that some make it out to be. This is why lactation support is far more important.

Why in the world would anyone choose to post breastfeeding photos online?!? 🤔

Because it’s a normal part of everyday life, and it helps promote breastfeeding, which in turn saves lives. The World Health Organization endorses breastfeeding selfies 😇💖

Pregnant women don't learn about profound brain changes - The Boston Globe

“The unmooring I felt, and that so many new mothers feel, likely was at least in part a manifestation of structural and functional brain changes, handed down through the millennia by mothers past and intended to mold me into a fiercely protective, motivated caregiver, focused on my baby’s survival and long-term well-being.”

So why does prenatal care ignore the topic altogether?

Stunning photo! Nice vernix facts.

Vernix Caseosa. Did you know that this incredible substance serves so many purposes?! 💕 It is a white, creamy biofilm that appears in the last trimester produced in part by fetal sebaceous glands. It is unique to humans! 💕 It acts as protection for the baby’s skin. It’s akin to Shea butter in texture. (Could you imagine soaking in water for 9 months? This stuff creates a barrier between the water and the skin. Genius!) 💕 It acts as an insulator, keeping in warmth. 💕 When left on the skin to be absorbed, helps the skin transition to a land environment by providing moisture and reducing the rate of skin dehydration. 💕Often seen in babies born before 40 weeks but that is just the average, some babies have little to none before 40 weeks and some babies are frosted at 42 weeks. 💕 It has its own microbiome! It contains oils and antibiotic peptides. An anti-microbial barrier of sorts! Plus, it is seeded by beneficial bacteria from the birth canal. 💕 The vernix within amniotic fluid when swallowed by the fetus has potential effects on the developing gut!

I’m not even kidding. I had to stop adding brilliant facts about vernix because Instagram said no more room. There are loads more magical facts all about vernix! I’ll add the link to an amazing NCBI article that surmises them all in the link in my profile! Happy reading!

📸: this image stopped me in my tracks! That little face, vernix covered, hugging mama!! Incredible capture by H20 Photography (h2o_sonya)!

Yet another reason to belly dance!

From Tom: Movement is an essential ‘food’ for the human body. Time out of mind there have been massage and movement traditions in every society. The martial arts and yoga have their roots deep in pre-history, probably starting in the Kerala region of India.

The other long tradition from every hunting - gathering society we know of is folk dance. Every member of the tribe was initiated into the seasonal and celebratory dances - these movements brought people together and - now since has caught up with this - fed the brain with nourishing perceptions as well as the actual nourishment of more blood supply.

Keep dancing! Happy Wednesday!

During Childbirth, Enduring the Patriarchy Was the Hardest Part

I stood after class with a crying woman. She wondered why her OB didn’t have her back in supporting her wishes about not working to the day she delivers. This woman is a nurse, she works in a hospital. Through her tears, she told me story after story of her coworkers also challenging her choices.
We NEED a cultural shift.

After nine months of misogynistic language from doctors and nurses, it’s easy to forget that you’re the decision-maker about your own body.

I am a Waldorf education fan. I am also a fan of information. The sex talk is about function, adding a relationship talk is the missing piece.

“Don’t talk to your son about sex. Instead, talk to him about relationships. Talk to him about romance. Talk to him about those funny feelings in the pit of his stomach and how that certain person turns his brain to mush. Talk to him about what a healthy relationship looks like, talk to him about mutual respect, and, oh please, talk to him about consent.”

Birth and after-birth procedures in the hospital can have an absolute critical impact on Milk. While not all hospitals will have policies that have a negative impact, most do. Many of these procedures seem benign or a “normal” aspect of birth in our culture. However, in the scope of normal humanity these procedures are anything but normal. What is biologically normal for an infant just born? There are key millstones that occur in the first 70 minutes of a newborn's life.

Beyond cultural consideration and more about developmental need.

Mothers today are bombarded with all kinds of conflicting advice on how long they should breastfeed. Some are told it’s “gross” or “weird” to nurse beyond six or 12 months. Some consider nursing a 2 or 3-year-old to be “extended” breastfeeding. The World Heath Organization recommendation is “up to t...
