This gave me all the feels 🥹

Teaching yoga as a career in this day and age is hard! 😮‍💨💸

For millennia, yoga teachers were monks, hermits, and recluses from society. They didn’t need to make money to survive or feed themselves or their families. They begged for food or had their students work together to meet the needs of the community living and learning together.

It’s challenging to make yoga a career that pays the bills 💵 like
🏡 Rent or a mortgage
🎓 Education loans
🚗 Car payments
👶 Children
🥗 Food
✈️ Vacations

For years, I struggled to pay the bills as a full-time teacher and Pain-Free Movement Specialist 😫😖

Despite having multiple graduate degrees and engaging in several business consulting gigs every year, my income was way below ⬇️ a livable wage

I was desperate to do better. I considered getting a part-time job at Instacart, Target, The Game Store, Barnes & Noble, Uber, anything to make more money!

I paid fake coaches and gurus lots of money 💰 to make me “successful”

But it didn’t work. My daily life was still a struggle and a huge source of stress and low self-esteem 😔

I thought that my struggles with money were a personal failure instead of realizing they were a problem with the yoga industry overall, and it’s exploitative, commoditized, and appropriate manifestations in today’s world

That’s why the words of this yoga teacher of over 20 years stuck with me

Who else has ever felt this way?

One of my private clients recently shared with me that after one of our yoga sessions her pain fell from an 8 (out of 10) to one and that her posture was better when she walked and stood. Another told me that he has completely stopped taking sleep medications at night or substances to wake him up in the morning. Because of yoga, he feels more alert, energized, and focused, and his new business is killing it!

My goal is to help people live joyful lives without pain, tension, or anxiety. To achieve this goal, I combine yoga with rehabilitative exercises, functional fitness, life coaching, and more. Whether you're new to yoga, an athlete or experienced yoga practitioner, or a desk worker in need of a strategy to get moving, my Rehabilitative Yoga program can help you live life the way you want to with strength, flexibility, and mobility.

⭐️Are you addressing truth and healing in your yoga class?⭐️
The burden of Diversity, Inclusion, and Representation is placed on the shoulders of marginalized groups from BIPOC to LGBTQ+ to disabled to fat people ✊🏾🌈♀️
So often I hear yoga teachers say that their classes are open to all when their classes are mostly made up of white, cisgender, middle to high-income students 😡
To them my response is, you may not be actively prohibiting marginalized students from entering your classes, but are you excluding them by not taking the steps to make them feel and welcome? 🤔🧐
When we intentionally or unintentionally exclude people who are not like us, we miss out on interactions with diverse perspectives and the heart of a yoga practice - unity with all humankind ❤️🌍❤️

I received this message from one of my private clients earlier this week
Since we'll both be traveling during the summer, I prepared weekly routines with Yoga, Functional Fitness, and Fascia exercises to keep her Pain-Free!
She was thrilled 🥳 She sent me this message as well as other words expressing her appreciation for the work we've done together
Honestly, the pleasure is all mine as I've learned so much from working with her. Her struggles with a cancer that completely ravaged her body and her lungs and her indefatigable drive to keep on pushing and bettering her body are a constant source of inspiration for me 🤩🏅
She proves that a Pain-Free Life Is Possible, for anyone and everyone 😊🌎
If you'd like to experience Pain-Free Movement for yourself, reach out 📞📩 It's in your grasp, you just need to take the first step 🪜

I am returning to Interfusion 2023!

I will be contributing to creating safer, more inclusive spaces by facilitating internal gender, LGBTQ+, and racial equity trainings for the project team, artists, and volunteers and festival-wide workshops open to ALL including:
⭐ Anti-Racism 101
⭐ Bridging the Gender Divide

Healing, movement, play, and connection are not separate from social justice issues. When addressed through a lens of equity, unity, and innate humanity, they can be powerful tools for our transformation and liberation.

In fact, Interfusion Festival's second Guiding Principle of Inclusion is:

“We are committed to fostering a culture where all feel supported, empowered, and welcomed. We encourage diversity of backgrounds and perspectives with utmost grace and respect”.

Are your yoga classes inclusive?
As a LGBTQ+ Indian-American, I know the benefits and challenges of growing up q***r and South Asian in the U.S.
I have not personally experienced what it is like to grow up black, trans, disabled, fat, a non-Native English speaker, etc.
I take the time to educate myself about other marginalized identities in order that my yoga classes and my daily professional interactions and personal actions do not unconsciously exclude folks who face a myriad of microaggressions and oppressions everyday.
Do I make mistakes? Yes.
Do I continuously learn new ways to respect, include, and honor others? Yes.
That's what yoga is after all, union of oneself and all other living beings, a journey from "I" to "we."
Thank you The Yogi Coyote for attending my Body-Positivity in Yoga workshop at YogaCon and your kind words.
Continuous learning and growth, respect and equity, and personal and societal transformation, these are why I do this work.

I was crying in pain, holding my knee, and cursing myself for deciding to exercise that day. 😭
I was in Paraguay, training for a marathon and miles from home. Little did I know that this would be the start of my pain journey, the premonition of over a decade of chronic pain. 🤕🤕🤕
Have you experienced this, times when you knew that your aches and pains were only going to make your life worse? 🙋🏾‍♀️
It sucks doesn’t it?
I wish I could tell you that the pain would go away by itself, but I can’t. It won’t.
It took me over 10 years of studying the human body and training in different movement and rehabilitation styles to fix my own pain.
And now, I’m here to fix your pain. 🙌🙌🙌
You shouldn’t have to experience pain...even once is too much.
Are you ready to listen to the messages your body has been sending you and learn how to solve your problems for good?
Comment below "I want to be Pain-Free!" ⏬⏬⏬

TW...

I'm going to talk about abuse, specifically in the yoga industry.

I've had a number of conversations with other yoga teachers about the problems with modern yoga, one of which is the rise of the star yoga teacher - whether that person is referred to as a guru, spiritual healer, or celebrity teacher. 🧘‍♀️👳‍♀️📿🕉️

The yoga industry has been plagued with a series of scandals from monetary theft, embezzlement, and financial fraud to sexual assault and harassment. 💸💸💸

And it's not just the yoga industry that's experiencing these problems. Health, fitness, diet/nutrition, life, and business coaches are just as likely to commit these injustices; teachers that claim to facilitate transformation or uplift students, especially women and marginalized folx, under the guise of spirituality, abundance, and brand marketing. It's predatory capitalism at its finest. 😡

What enables these teachers and coaches to get away with their exploitative behavior is how they lure students in. At first their behavior is nice, as they seem to take a special interest in particular students' "progress."

Very quickly, however, it becomes apparent that their strategies benefit themselves and not other people. Students may experience some benefits as they pick up breadcrumbs dropped by their instructors. They may even feel like they're doing better than other students or people who haven't been showered by the attention and received the unique guidance of their gifted teachers. Hence, the idea of privilege - relative power over others while still suffering from mistreatment and manipulation by the people they trusted to guide them. 🛑☢️⛔⚠️

Sound familiar?

I'll admit that I've personally experienced this type of predatory behavior. 😥

Let's take this topic out of the shadows, out of a place of shame, and discuss it openly. 💁🙆‍♀️

Have you experienced this in yoga or in other settings? How did you spot the deception and how did you respond? 🤔

Thank you Schuck Dakota for the wise words and the inspiration.

Today I'm not going to share my words, but the wise words of my colleagues.

In our workshop series "Yoga as an Act of Subversion," spoke about yoga as our path to collective liberation with the statement "Yoga is a song of freedom." She raised the question, "Who are we breathing for?" I would add "Who are we moving for? Who are we healing for?" 🌬️❤️‍🩹

On a superficial level, most people who enter yoga spaces enter for their own personal transformation from the strengthening of their physical bodies to the calming of their minds. 🧘‍♀️

This ignores the fact that in this day and age, our abilities to live with love, health, and happiness depend on the well-being of those around us. Put simply, if we don't care for other people, sooner or later it's going to bite us in the ass 😡😰 (you have only to turn on the TV or look at social media to see the truth of this statement).

You don't have to be a narcissist to ignore other's problems, you could simply decide to put other people's discomfort and lack of financial or physical safety below the fulfillment of your own wants and desires. We do this everyday when we decide to patronize Facebook, order online from Amazon, or shop at Walmart because they're convenient and cheap options. 💲💸

I do this too, to a certain extent we all do. Where I draw the line is when it comes to racial, gender, sexual, cultural, body, and other types of equity. Those are the hills on which I will die on in the same way as my environmentalist friends cannot comprehend why anyone would not recycle or treat nature with respect. 🌀🏞️

Whatever your cause is, however you want to change the world, know that it is not independent of your actions. When we walk into a yoga space where we can enjoy the benefits of healing and others cannot because they've been unintentionally excluded due to their identity, we enjoy great privilege. When we can take time out of our day to consciously breathe, we are lucky. Not everyone is.

Rabbi Amy Schwarzman says, "To restore breath to one who is not able to breathe freely is a fulfillment of our partnership with the divine, and our responsibility to bring the sacred and just into the world." 🌎

The next time you enter a yoga space and are asked to practice pranayama, reflect "Who am I breathing for? Are my actions in here and off the mat helping others breathe?" 🤔☮️

In my element, facilitating social justice workshops in movement, healing, and yoga spaces. ♀️✊🏾🌈☮️I often get asked "Wh...
02/02/2022

In my element, facilitating social justice workshops in movement, healing, and yoga spaces. ♀️✊🏾🌈☮️

I often get asked "Why are you bringing politics into these spaces?" to which my response is "Who are we moving and breathing for? Who are we healing?" 🌬️❤️‍🩹

The quote "Racism is everywhere, it's in the air we breathe", often attributed to Alicia Garza, the founder of the BLM movement, speaks to how inequality, differing levels of access, and the values of white dominant culture such as competition, individualism, perfectionism, and predatory capitalism are found EVERYWHERE, including in spaces intended for self-transformation. 🧘🧘🏾‍♀️🧘🏻‍♂️

In this era in which the products we consume on a daily basis from food to electronics to social media to literature come from all around the globe, our individual wellbeing is tied to collective liberation. If we can't assure the peace and happiness let alone the physical and emotional safety of the people who grow our food, make our clothing, mine for the metals found in our laptops and cellphones, provide us with art and entertainment, 💫 how can we ever hope to SURVIVE as a species? 💫

✳️Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion✳️ are no longer optional ideals for this moment in history, but mandatory values we humans need to implement in order to survive, THRIVE, and FLOURISH. ☀️☀️☀️

Here's where I need your help ⛑️ - If you know of Corporations, Nonprofits, Community Organizations, or Yoga/Movement/Healing Studios, Festivals, or Conferences that could benefit from DEI training around:
✨ Race and Racism ✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿
✨ Gender and Sexuality (LGBTQIA+) ⚧️♀️🌈
✨ Cultural Appropriation and Appreciation ☑️
✨ Privilege and Power 💰⚖️
✨ Body Positivity 🫶
✨ Pain-Free Movement 🩹😊 (because we ALL need tools to address the trauma of living life in a pandemic and an unequal, scary world)

Can you please introduce me to them? ⏬

Justice, empowerment, and bringing healing gifts to all are my life's passions and is so needed at this moment in time. ❣️

That's exactly what we will be discussing in my upcoming workshop series

YOGA AS AN ACT OF OF SUBVERSION: REIMAGINING & REFORMING COMMUNITY.

We'll have 4 in-depth conversations on the following topics:
🌟 Is Yoga a Pyramid Scheme?
🌟 Can you be Fat and Fit?
🌟 Does Yoga divide us?
🌟 FREEDOM for whom?

We'll dive into yoga history and philosophy as we learn about the role yoga plays in our individual and collective liberation.

Each week we will consider one of four aspects of the practice:

12/01/2021

Hi friends 👋

I know I haven't posted in a while...the 'ugly truth' is that I have been reconsidering my relationship with social media.

I recently read the book "An Ugly Truth" written by journalists at The New York Times which exposes many ugly truths about Facebook (now Meta), the company that owns Instagram and WhatsApp, including:
😠 Numerous privacy violations, many of which have disregarded U.S. and international regulations
😡 Interference in national elections, leading to the most inanely unqualified president in U.S. history and the similar undemocratic rise of populist fascists in countries around the world
🤬 The proliferation of hate speech worldwide, including years of allowing 'fake news' which demonized Muslims and other marginalized/minority groups and contributed in no small part to the GENOCIDE of Rohingyas in Myanmar

Which leads me to question, what the hell am I doing on this platform? 🤔🤯

On one hand, Facebook and Instagram enable me to build community with other yoga lovers and social justice activists, educate students, and raise awareness about critical social issues, not to mention share pictures and stay in touch with friends from around the world.

On the other hand, Meta is a monopoly that has condoned and contributed to some pretty horrific things.

Add to this the use of these platforms to portray glossy, unrealistic views of our and others' lives and the prognostic is not good.

❓What do you think about the role social media, specifically Facebook and Instagram, play in solving or perpetuating social problems?❓ Comment with your thoughts below and tag yoga and social justice folks you follow👇

Ultimately Meta is a company that supports freedom of speech and posts which play into its popularity algorithm and will probably not kick me off its platforms for this post.

However, if I decide or it decides that I should quit Facebook and Instagram, I don't want to lose this community. If you find my posts valuable, I plan on continuing to share this content on my newsletter and blog (link in bio 👆).

Signing off for now 🚀

In a recent interview with Accessible Yoga, I found myself making the statement "I have never fully felt comfortable in a Yoga space."

Never. Felt. Comfortable. 😯

I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years, yet I have never felt entirely comfortable in a yoga class, studio, or training.

This practice designed to encompass the outcasts and the marginalized, from brown and black bodies to the poor and low caste to female-identified and disabled folks, is not almost the exclusive purview of cishet wealthy white women.

How did that happen? 🤔⁉️

Colonization, White Supremacy, and Capitalism colluded to turn a transformational philosophy accessible to ALL regardless of their gender, sexuality, caste, ability, etc. into a purely physical exercise routine available only to the richest, wealthiest, most flexible, and lightest skin.

In doing so, it left behind those folx who don't fit the mainstream standards of financial success, fitness, or beauty.

Enough is enough. It's time to return Yoga to its roots and ensure that the people it was created to benefit, as well as all other people, are able to enjoy this rich practice.

The time to reclaim Yoga is NOW.

[ID: Three posters feature quotes of Pooja Virani on a white and blue background. They say, "I have never fully felt comfortable in a Yoga space," "Yoga is not as representative or as inclusive of all the people it should embody," and "The time to reclaim Yoga is NOW."

Is chronic pain or tightness preventing you from exercising, moving, or sleeping the way you would like to?

Plus, my program is currently on sale for 30-50% off. That's my biggest sale ever! 😲😲😲
