We are wondering what it means when both ends of the yoga world – corporate chains and solo operations – are struggling to survive. The news that Triyoga in London has gone out of business reminds us of the arc of yoga we have been a part of the past 25+ years. Glen and I were among the foundation teachers at the original Triyoga Primrose Hill studio that opened in 2000. Triyoga had “investors” and changed the landscape of yoga classes in the city, an experience that has been replicated all over the world. On the one hand, people say corporations have destroyed the soul of yoga, and consequently ruined it for everyone. Or maybe yoga in general has just been lost along with everyone’s attention in this economy. What’s obvious is that if you value the yoga classes you attend – in fact any kind of small business – then keep showing up because we all need your support.
