🌿 What’s actually inside an herb?
We’ve covered actions, energetics, and affinities — but WHY do plants work the way they do? The answer lies in their constituents.
The Working Apothecary | No. 05: Understanding Herbal Constituents!
🌿 Alkaloids: Biologically active, even in very small amounts.
🌸 Flavonoids: Antioxidant activity and protective roles.
🍂 Tannins: The drying, puckering sensation in strong tea.
💧 Mucilage: Water-loving compounds forming soothing, gel-like substances.
🌼 Volatile Oils: The aromatic compounds behind an herb’s scent.
🌱 Saponins: Soap-like, foaming compounds.
But an herb isn’t just one compound. Each plant is a complex mixture — and preparation matters: infusion, tincture, or oil each extract different compounds.
The plant is more than the sum of its parts — understanding those parts helps us understand the plant. 🌿
