Last weekend, Viva Solutions LLC had the privilege of teaching a 16-hour Wilderness First Aid (WRFA) course at the University of Northern Iowa with a highly motivated group of students and outdoor leaders.

This course builds a strong foundation in wilderness patient care, focusing on structured assessment and decision-making. Students learned and practiced a systematic approach that includes:

• Scene Size-Up
• Primary Assessment
• Secondary Assessment
• Treatment, planning, and evacuation decision-making

The weekend wrapped up with a final scenario, where teams managed patients from initial assessment through treatment and evacuation planning. The scenario concluded with the arrival of St. Luke's LifeGuard Air Ambulance serving as the "evacuation crew". Their arrival gave students a real-world look at how air medical teams support remote emergencies. Thank you Lifeguard for taking time out of your schedule to share your aircraft, experience, and knowledge with our students.

In wilderness medicine, emergencies are often everyday problems in inconvenient places, where help may be hours away and good judgment matters most.

While we hope these outdoor professionals never need to provide care in the field, we are confident they are prepared to step in and help when it matters most.

Hey world, Jake here with Viva Solutions LLC.

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be teaching our 4th annual Wilderness and Remote First Aid Course. Training people to handle emergencies—whether in the workplace, on the trail, or miles from help—has been my work for years, and it’s something I take seriously. I’ve taught CPR, First Aid, and BLS across Iowa for a wide range of groups, and I’m proud to bring that experience into our wilderness program.

If you spend time outdoors, this course prepares you to stay calm, think clearly, and manage injuries until professional help arrives. Completion of the course results in an American Red Cross certification that is valid for two years!

We’re coming back to the University of Northern Iowa College of Education for our fourth Wilderness and Remote First Aid course — February 28 & March 1, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This isn’t your average First Aid class. It’s two full days of hands-on, scenario-driven training designed for those who lead from the front — outdoor educators, trip leaders, and adventurers who know help isn’t always just minutes away.

You’ll learn how to assess, adapt, and act when the unexpected happens miles from the trailhead — backed by American Red Cross certification and real-world experience.

We’re proud to team up again with UNI to prepare the next wave of confident, capable outdoor leaders.
