Until recently, a transplant patient could only receive an organ from someone with a compatible blood type. An organ from someone with an incompatible blood type would be perceived as foreign and vulnerable to attack by the recipient's natural antibodies. Now, through a process called plasmapheresis, a recipient can receive a kidney from a donor of a different blood type. This procedure is currently being provided at a growing number of transplant centers.

While under the supervision of medical professionals, children with chronic kidney disease who normally wouldn't be able to attend camp due to health issues, such as being on dialysis, are able to spend a week with other children who are going through similar experiences. At no cost to the families, these kids are able to see that they are not alone and can spend time focused on just being a kid and not feel "different."

General information

Kidney Disease The NKF of Indiana, Inc. (NKFI) encourages Hoosiers to consider some of the many ways their kidneys quietly support their health day-to-day (filtering their blood, controlling blood pressure, supporting healthy bones) and how much their health will suffer if they develop chronic kidney disease. A critical first step toward focusing on kidney health is to know personal and family health histories. If you have one or more of the following risk factors, the NKFI suggests you to talk to your doctor about being screened for kidney disease or contact NKFI for a free screening in your area.

My name is Emily Knaub, and I am a senior at Butler University conducting research for my undergraduate thesis. Having one kidney myself, I have always been interested in nephrology and transplants. During my initial research on kidney transplants, I discovered a noticeable lack of research regarding the experiences of living kidney donors prior to their donor nephrectomy and was inspired to focus my thesis on these donors. Accordingly, I am in need of survey participants for my research. If you are interested in participating or would simply like to learn more about my research, please click the link below. Thank you for your help!
