New partnership will allow Iowa to help improve health care across the state

Our very own Program Director has been very busy! Click through for the full story but Dr. Cormac O'Sullivan is the co-director of the brand new SIM-IA program. The program will help first responders in rural areas simulate seldom-seen emergencies to better prepare for those situations when they do occur.

This is another way that the University of Iowa and the UI DNP Program in Anesthesia Nursing focus on improving healthcare in rural Iowa. Go Hawks!

https://now.uiowa.edu/2021/02/college-nursing-helmsley-trust-partnership-simulation-motion-iowa

A new $8 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust will help the University of Iowa educate health care providers and first responders in rural parts of the state on procedures they don’t often have the opportunity to perform.

Good news on the vaccine front! But - continue to wear your mask, keep your distance and wash your hands often! Avoid large-group gatherings, especially indoors.

We're in the middle of a big surge of COVID-19 infections right now so we need to keep being vigilant on these precautions.

Positive news on the race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

This story from the Iowa Association of Nurse Anesthetists (IANA) really puts into perspective how we managed when the COVID restrictions were imposed back in March. And this photo is the "room" where it happened! 😉

This is a neat interactive story that shows that masks WORK. For those of us who are more visually oriented....

A visual journey through the microscopic world of the coronavirus shows how masks provide an important defense against transmission.

One our senior SRNAs, Ashlyn Rosol, is featured by the College of Nursing! She’s had a long journey but we’re so glad she’s here!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Deborah Ashlyn Rosol, DNP Class of May 2021

Deborah Ashlyn Rosol served in the military, married, started a family, and moved nearly 1,000 miles from home before discovering her true calling as a nurse anesthetist.

Rosol, who is originally from Georgia, moved to Iowa with her husband following their years of service in the Air Force and Navy. She knew that she wanted to pursue a career in nursing due to her innate desire to help others as well as an inherent interest in health care … but Rosol also wanted a career where she could earn an advanced degree.

After researching several career options, Rosol made a profound realization as she prepared to have her second child at a rural Iowa hospital. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at the hospital made a significant impact on her level of care. This CRNA discussed pain management options that made Rosol and her husband feel comfortable, which was quite significant given Rosol’s previous childbirth was “very unpleasant”. Following an “amazing” birth experience, Rosol was so inspired by that CRNA she made it her career ambition to become one.

Rosol started her nursing career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, first as a nurse on the surgical specialty unit then by working in the Surgical Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, gaining valuable critical care experience. Now at the tail end of UI’s Anesthesia Nursing program, Rosol’s aspiration of becoming a CRNA has nearly come to fruition.

Wearing a mask can put a serious dent in the spread of the coronavirus. Lives can be saved.

Research shows that if more than 80% of the population wears a face covering, the pandemic would end. http://spr.ly/6012GZD9j #MaskUpIA

Check out what our students are up to during the pandemic. Taking lemons and making lemonade.

The nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has inspired Rachel Westernik, an SRNA at the University of Iowa, to #StepForward and dedicate her doctoral project to the preparedness of hospitals and communities for future public health needs.

University of Iowa College of Nursing

The sun has set on another University of Iowa semester; however, this was anything but “another” semester. Far from it. Spring 2020 presented a unique set of challenges and obstacles, the likes of which most of us have never known.

During these extraordinary times we have been collectively challenged. Many of us have understandably experienced restlessness, apprehension, and uncertainty on a global scale. But together, we’ve also found an inner strength and shown the type of fortitude and resolve that is necessary to keep moving forward.

To the spring 2020 graduates – you did it! This was a final semester you’ll likely never forget. The world needs you, so go out there and show them what Iowa Nursing is all about.

To the students – you have shown unwavering dedication and resiliency to get through these challenging times. Hold your heads high and be proud of all your hard work.

To the faculty – your ability to rapidly adapt to the evolving landscape of curriculum delivery is truly remarkable. From moving dissertation and final project defenses to a virtual setting to collaborating on COVID-19 related research projects to developing principles and strategies for teaching in the fall, your devotion is beyond commendable.

To the staff – you rose to the challenge with grit and determination, ensuring university and collegiate standards were upheld while continuing to put people first.

It was a communal effort to make this semester work. Truly a job well done, Hawkeyes.

“It is only in our darkest hours that we may discover the true strength of the brilliant light within ourselves that can never, ever, be dimmed.” —Doe Zantamata

Congratulations to our Director, Cormac O'Sullivan! Practicing on the cutting edge and sharing the knowledge is what we strive to do every day.

“Providing Anesthesia for Emergent Surgery in a Patient With COVID-19,” an article penned by Dr. Cormac O’Sullivan, director of the anesthesia nursing program, and two UIHC colleagues, was recently published by the AANA Journal, the official publication of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

As a result of the article, AANA has asked Dr. O’Sullivan and a UCLA/USC colleague to conduct a webinar intended to share knowledge in caring for COVID-19 positive patients during surgery. The webinar airs Friday, April 17 at 4 p.m. CST and is free to members of the association.

Excellent work, Dr. O’Sullivan, and a wonderful example of Iowa Nursing pride!
