Legislative Call-to-Action
EMS Action Alert on Essential Services Bill

IEMSA Priorities Moving Through The Legisaltive Process!

Two issues IEMSA is supporting are getting attention in the Iowa House of Representatives right now! Please find your State Representative (we may ask you to contact your Senator later!) and email and let him/her know that you support making EMS an essential service with funding to make that designation possible. Acknowledge in your email that staffing is the other side of the coin that will continue to be a challenge but that these pieces of legislation set the foundation we need to begin addressing the challenges of providing excellent EMS coverage statewide. Also, please feel free to mention that you support HF 144, increasing the individual tax credit for volunteer fire, EMS, and reserve officers from $100 to $200.

HF 562 by Ways and Means Chairperson Lee Hein and championed by Rep. Bobby Kaufmann is our essential services bill. Although there have been some changes made to address some concerns by interest groups and the Senate, we are in favor of the bill and appreciate that it still accomplishes the task of making local funding sources available as an essential service. This is a big deal and a HUGE part of funding EMS in rural Iowa! Passed Committee unanimously and eligible for floor debate.

HF 144 by Rep. Bossman increases the individual tax credits for volunteer fire, EMS, and reserve peace officers from $100 to $200. Passed Committee unanimously and eligible for floor debate.

Please support Iowa EMS across our state by contacting your legislators today!

October 16th is World Restart a Heart Day!
Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital in the US. About 54% of those people do not receive bystander CPR which could double their chance of survival. World Restart a Heart Day aims to raise global awareness about the importance of bystander CPR.
Johnson County Ambulance Service periodically offers Hands Only CPR classes throughout the community for both adults and children. Follow us on Facebook to be informed of upcoming events!

Many of us have debris from the Derecho that went through Iowa >2 weeks ago, we want to remind you to dispose of it in a safe way! Small fires can quickly spread & get out control. Its no surprise it has been hot and dry. Small fires can grow, potentially effecting surrounding areas & buildings. Smoke from fires can also effect people with respiratory disease. Do your part in keeping Iowans safe &healthy. Contact your local City/County government for more information on local burn policies, and possibly avoid fines.

K9 Luke of the ICPD served our citizens, visitors and communities with pride. He may have been a K9 but he was an amazing partner and asset to all. He was, the best boy.

It is with a heavy heart that we pass along the news that K9 Luke has been put to rest due to sudden health complications. Throughout his time as a member of the ICPD, K9 Luke brought adventure and joy to the community, the ICPD, and his handler's family. During his 7-year career, Luke was not only an incredible asset to the department but also an invaluable partner. K9 Luke was loyal, brave and dedicated to every aspect of his job and he will be greatly missed.

Setting the Standard - About Us

Johnson County Ambulance Service was established in 1966, providing exclusive 911 Emergency Medical Care to Johnson County and some of our surrounding communities. Initially operated by the Johnson County Sheriff Department, the service became its own department in 1970. In 1976 the service began providing advanced pre-hospital care through a joint venture with Mercy Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospital. The service became a Paramedic level ambulance service in 1981 and continues to provide this advanced level of service today.

Services are provided to over 150,000 residents, with the addition to thousands of people who travel into our district every day. With a response area of close to 623 square miles. The service boast a call volume of over 10,000 responses a year. The ambulance service has seen a steady increase calls for service every year, and continues to see the number rise. Johnson County Ambulance currently maintains a fleet of eight ambulances, staffing three of these units 24 hours a day. Two trucks are located at the Iowa City base near the downtown area, and one at the Coralville Fire Station #2. A fourth ambulance is located at a Iowa City Fire Station #4, and is staffed 2/3 time, with a fifth ambulance staffed on the West Side of Iowa City, and is staffed during peak call times throughout the week.

In addition to emergency ambulance services, Johnson County Ambulance also provides several non-emergency services. We provide non-emergency transports for hospitals, hospice, and other facilities in the area by request. We also provide special event coverage. We have been honored, for over 20 years to collaborate with the University of Iowa Athletic Department providing medical coverage at football, basketball, wrestling and other athletic events. Johnson County Ambulance also provides Special Event Standby for other agencies and services when requested.

Our department is dedicated to our community and our Public Relations division is active in sponsoring education, fundraisers, appearances, and many other events.
