To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville will provide services for individuals with the condition, from birth to adult. The nonprofit has expanded its impact by relocating from a small house in Riverside to larger offices on the Southside that can accommodate more on-site programming.

This fall, the association will launch Northeast Florida’s first employment training program tailored specifically to people who have Down syndrome. — The Florida Times-Union

'I haven’t stopped crying since the vote.' State adds SMA to its newborn screening panel

Florida will become the 17th state to add SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) to its screening panel, once fully implemented.
.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy occurs because of mutations in a gene that produces muscle-building proteins. It affects about 1 in 6,000 to 10,000 babies and is considered one of the most common genetic causes of childhood death. Of the four types, type 1 SMA is the most severe.
.
The test can help with the early diagnosis of about 20 newborns each year in Florida, said Dr. Richard Finkel, chief of neurology at Nemours Children's Hospital, who has been involved in studying and developing Spinraza.

A state advisory board voted on Friday to add Spinal Muscular Atrophy to its newborn screening panel, a victory for parents of children who are born with a genetic disease that can be severely debilitating or fatal if not diagnosed and treated early.

Take a moment to check out this amazing technology that helped Chris Howell walk after he suffered a C5 spinal cord injury in 2011 from a car crash.

Jacksonville is truly fortunate to have this cutting edge technology so close to home.

Also, the JT Townsend Foundation paid for the treatment.

A true miracle!

First Coast News was with us over a period of three months in the Brooks Cybernic Treatment Center to follow Brooks patient and employee Chris Howell as he went through rehabilitation with the Cyberdyne Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL). Thank you to the JT Townsend Foundation and the Funk Zitiello Foundation for sponsoring Chris' treatment!
