Don’t throw away your Speller’s shot!
In today’s world of social media, instant gratification, and keeping up with the Jones’, it is more important than ever to protect our Nonspeakers and not throw away their shot. The world is watching. What we do today impacts generations to come. History truly does have its eyes on us, as practitioners, Communication Regulation Partners (CRPS) and Spellers.
What does that mean? It means we must vigorously use best practices in all instances. The hierarchy for S2C is very clear and many times parents want to skip steps in order to get “open faster” and even further once open taking on their own agenda. This is dangerous on so many levels, but mostly at the risk of taking away the Nonspeakers agency and autonomy over their own words, needs and desires.
How do we uphold best practice?
1) Lessons, lessons lessons! Until the Speller is fluently open, only relying on initiation and continuation prompts, practice should be based in lessons. This provides a safe environment for both speller and CRP to practice their skills. Issue lessons are wonderful ways to approach needing to address highly emotional topics.
2) Board placement! Board in the same place every time all the time.
3) Word Boundaries! Allow the Speller to truly get their unique thoughts out. Do not call words until they are without a doubt complete. THE could be THESE, THEN, THEATER THERE, THEODORE, THEME ECT.
4) Follow the guidance of your certified S2C Practitioner. They know what they are talking about and are trained to help you and your child.
5) Watch what you post! Nothing should be posted without direct Speller permission. It is their life and their words.
Remember this isn’t about us. Practicing with fidelity ensures Nonspeakers have a voice and a future long after we are gone and for generations to come! It is not about what is “easy” for the Practitioner or CRP. This is all about the Nonspeakers. The injustice is real and they have enough hoops to jump through. Let’s set them up for success and not add to the chaos. Not doing so comes at the cost and detriment to the Nonspeaker!
