Healing doesn't always feel good. 😬

We often think healing means feeling better and better every day. But the body doesn't always work that way. Sometimes slowing down, reconnecting with ourselves, and becoming aware of what we've been carrying can actually feel uncomfortable.

In Spinal Flow, we look at three kinds of stress: physical, chemical, and emotional. Our bodies are constantly adapting to all three, whether it's the physical demands of daily life, what we're exposed to in our environment, or the emotional weight of grief, caregiving, and simply trying to keep up.

And sometimes we don't realize how much we've been carrying until we finally slow down.

Have you ever pushed through an incredibly stressful time, only to feel completely exhausted once it was over? Or noticed how your stomach reacts when life feels overwhelming? Our nervous system is deeply connected to our digestion, immune function, and how we experience pain. Stress isn't just in our minds. We experience it throughout our bodies.

One of the things I love about Spinal Flow is that it invites us to develop a different relationship with those signals. Instead of always asking, "How do I make this feeling go away?" we can begin asking, "What is my body responding to, and what does it need?"

Sometimes that's rest, nourishment, movement, emotional support, or permission to stop pushing. And sometimes it means recognizing that we're genuinely ill and need to care for ourselves accordingly.

Not every uncomfortable symptom means something is wrong with our progress, but not every symptom is a healing response either.

If you're receiving Spinal Flow care and notice changes in how you're feeling, please communicate with me. Understanding what you're experiencing helps us support you and continue your care when appropriate.

Healing isn't always linear.
There can be moments of ease, moments of discomfort, and a whole lot of learning to listen along the way.

Our bodies are remarkably intelligent. Perhaps part of healing is learning to work with that intelligence rather than continually overriding it. 🩵

Let's talk about your Foundation Gateway. 🌸🔻🌸

Have you ever thrown your low back out and suddenly EVERYTHING becomes a challenge? Getting out of bed, putting on your shoes, bending over, or even finding a comfortable position to sleep?

It's amazing how much we take our foundation for granted until it starts demanding our attention!

At the base of your spine sits the sacrum, a fascinating upside-down triangular bone that connects your spine to your pelvis. Together with the sacroiliac (SI) joints, it helps support the spine and transfer weight into your pelvis and legs.

In Spinal Flow, we call this area the Foundation Gateway.

When this region becomes strained or irritated, even simple movements can become uncomfortable. And when we're hurting, the whole body can begin bracing and protecting itself.

I was reminded of this firsthand after a long day of heavy physical work. One awkward movement a few days later, and WOW, my SI joint had something to say! Suddenly I was moving very carefully.

After more than 20 years of working with bodies, I've seen how much low back discomfort can affect everyday life.

In Spinal Flow, we gently work with the Foundation Gateway to invite greater ease and connection within the body. It's also a gateway associated with stability, support, and feeling grounded.

If your low back has been asking for attention, perhaps it's time to listen.

For nearly twenty years, we've been blessed to receive gifts of paʻakai, the traditional Hawaiian salt gathered at the salt ponds in Hanapēpē. It's something precious, deeply revered, and not commercially sold. To me, it's one of Kauaʻi's greatest treasures.

After the hurricane brought devastating flooding to the salt ponds, a call went out for community help. I knew in my heart that after all these years of receiving, it was time to give back.

And wow, did the community show up.

There were what seemed like a thousand people or more, passing buckets, digging trenches, moving sand, and working together to help the water drain. I spent a long time working in one of those trenches, scooping sand and feeling the earth and water shifting beneath my feet.

As we cleared the debris, the water began to move. Little by little, areas that had been submerged began to reveal themselves again.

I couldn't help thinking about how easily small things can accumulate until something that once flowed freely becomes blocked. And how sometimes it takes a little help, a little movement, and a whole lot of patience to find that flow again.

But what moved me most was the community. So many people showing up with their hands, their hearts, and their willingness to do whatever was needed. No one person could have accomplished what all those hands did together.

We aren't meant to do everything alone. We need each other. We thrive in connection, in belonging, and in knowing that when something matters, we can come together to care for it.

I went home tired, sunburnt, sandy, and with a very full heart. What a gift to be part of something so much bigger than ourselves.

May the salt beds be restored and the tradition carried on for many generations to come.🙏🩵✨

Have you experienced a Community Spinal Flow session yet?

One of the things I love about Community Flow is that we can come together in a shared space while each person has their own individual experience.

There are three tables in my studio, and sometimes they are all filled and sometimes not. During our 30-minute sessions, I move between them, working with each person individually. There's no class to follow, nothing you need to do or figure out. Just an opportunity to settle in, rest, and give your nervous system some dedicated attention.

Some people come a couple of times a week, while others come when they feel they need a little extra support. Every person's experience is different.

I've added a new **FLOW TIMES** Highlight to my Instagram profile so you can easily find our weekly session times. If you've been curious about Community Flow, take a look and come join us.

I was sitting outside yesterday when the sun caught this beautiful flower stalk on one of the banana trees, and I couldn't stop looking at it. All I could see was a spine—the pelvis, the sacrum, the tailbone.

Nature has this incredible way of repeating her patterns in the way things grow, move and live. When I look around, it really drives home the point that we are not so different from the plants, trees and all the other living organisms on this earth. We need fresh air, clean water, nourishment, movement, rest, connection and community. We need the right conditions to thrive.

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent, but sometimes our systems need a little extra support finding their way back to those natural rhythms. That's what I'm here for. Not to heal you, but to support your body in reconnecting with its own innate wisdom and its incredible capacity to heal.

You usually know when your system is asking for more support. If you've been feeling that lately, I have space available for Welcome Flows and Community Spinal Flow sessions this week. Reach out to me or book online when you're ready. 🩵

Do you have something you do almost without realizing it when you’re stressed? Maybe you bite your nails, pick at your skin, clench your jaw, hold your breath, or bounce your leg. For me, it has always been my nails.

I’ve bitten and picked at them for as long as I can remember, especially when my busy mind takes over and I get lost in my thoughts. Over time, I’ve recognized it as one of those little signs that I’m stressed, too much in my head, and disconnected from my body.

About a year ago, my daughter became a manicurist and started helping me grow strong, healthy nails. I wanted to keep them beautiful, so I made a conscious effort to stop picking and biting. What surprised me was that after a lifetime of doing it, this time it actually felt possible.

Maybe I was simply ready. But I also know how different I feel after years of receiving Spinal Flow, doing my own inner work, and learning to notice my patterns instead of unconsciously living inside them. Something you’ve done your whole life doesn’t necessarily have to be something you do forever.

There’s a beautiful full-circle piece too. My mom supported us as a single mother in the ’80s doing nails. She was an incredibly talented manicurist and passed away a few years ago. The first time I sat in my daughter’s pedicure chair and watched her work, I cried. I could see my mom in her hands so clearly. It felt like a gift had traveled through the generations and landed right there in that chair.

Now my daughter has given me what I call my “Spinal Flow nails” — blue, watery, wavy and perfectly me.
I LOVE having nails, but even more, I love what they represent.

Patterns can change. Sometimes it takes intention, support, deeper work, or simply enough awareness to hear what our bodies have been trying to tell us.

So maybe instead of asking, “What’s wrong with this habit?” we get curious and ask, “What is my body trying to tell me?”

And what might change if I learned to listen? 🩵

Yesterday I drove past Kalihiwai for the first time since the hurricane.

I knew there had been damage, but seeing it with my own eyes was still shocking.

Huge trees completely uprooted. Roots that had lived quietly beneath the earth for decades suddenly exposed to the light.

And I couldn't help but see the resemblance to our nervous system.

All those intricate roots, branching and weaving beneath the surface.

It made me think about what happens when we move through something big — a storm, a loss, a change, a season of uncertainty, or simply years of holding everything together.

Our nervous system holds so much.

We adapt. We brace. We compensate. We find ways to keep standing.

Until something shifts.

One of the things I love about Spinal Flow is witnessing what can happen when the body is given enough safety and space to begin letting go of what it has been holding.

Patterns can begin to change.
There can be movement where there was holding.
Space where there was compression.

And sometimes, after an uprooting, there is an opportunity to ask:

What wants to grow here now?

Our island has been through an enormous uprooting. There is still cleanup happening, people recovering, grief for what was lost and gratitude for what remained.

And today, as Nolo moves gently past us, I am especially grateful for that grace.

Maybe this next season isn't about rushing to put everything back exactly as it was.

Maybe there is an invitation to listen.

To our land.
To our bodies.
To our nervous systems.
To one another.

To tend gently to what remains.

And to make room for new roots, new growth, and perhaps even new ways of being.

One day, one breath at a time.🩵

09/25/2026

A prayer for our islands as Nolo moves through the waters around us.

May we stay prepared, diligent and informed — while remaining grounded, connected and breathing.

May we care for our neighbors and one another.

And may Nolo live up to one of the meanings I found in her name…

**Ease. Grace.**

Move gently, Nolo. Keep moving on your way.

May it be so.✨🙏✨

A prayer for balance on this Fall Equinox. 💛🙏💫

Today we cross the threshold into a new season. Libra season. The slow turn inward. A moment of balance between light and dark, and an invitation to notice where we might find greater balance within ourselves.

May we find the balance between doing and being. Between productivity and rest. Between giving and receiving. Between holding on and letting go.

May we remember that light and darkness both belong. That nature does not resist her seasons, and neither must we.

May we soften into what is changing. Make peace with what has been. Trust what is becoming. And find our center again and again as the world continues to move around us.

My prayer today is for balance within our bodies, our relationships, our communities and our beautiful Earth. May we come back into right relationship with ourselves, with one another, with nature and with Spirit.

And today I also celebrate my beautiful friend Blossom Bluesky whose birthday falls on this threshold between seasons. This painting was created for me by her years ago, and it carries so much of her magic, creativity and healing spirit.

Happy birthday, Blossom. Thank you for bringing your beauty into this world into this clinic through your art. 🫶

May this next season bring us all a little more balance, a little more peace, and a deeper willingness to flow with the changing seasons of our lives.

Blessed Equinox. May we find our way back to center.⚖️🩵✨

I’ve been thinking a lot about the different roles we each play in recovery.

For those of us whose homes and neighborhoods were spared the worst of the storm, there can be this strange feeling of, “Why them and not me? Should I be doing more?”

I’ve felt it too.

But watching our community these past few weeks has reminded me that we don’t all have the same role to play.

Some people are clearing debris and rebuilding homes. Some are feeding people, restoring power, sharing supplies and caring for displaced families.

And some of us need to keep tending to the places that are still standing. To open our doors. Go to work. Care for people. Keep some sense of normalcy moving so there is something for our community to return to.

That matters too.

Recovery needs people responding directly to the crisis, AND it needs places where those people can rest, breathe, receive and refill their wells.

I’m realizing that’s part of my role.

Spinal Flow Kaua‘i is open, and my Community Flow sessions are happening this week.

If your body is still carrying the storm — the exhaustion, disrupted sleep, worry, grief, adrenaline, or simply the weight of everything that has happened — you are welcome here.

You don’t have to wait until everything is okay to take care of yourself.

Sometimes our role is to help.

And sometimes our role is to let ourselves receive.

Come rest. Come breathe. Come find your flow again. 🌊
