Good information from my friend, Dr. Ed Lafleur

To all of my valued patients,
I am writing to communicate regarding this current viral outbreak. I know there is an overload of information on both news and social media, and you are likely tired of hearing about it. I would like to share my thoughts.

First, it is important to know that Coronavirus belongs to a family of virus that along with Rhinovirus and Adenovirus , make up the 100 or so viruses that we refer to as the “common cold”, and circulate the world on an annual basis. Secondly, viruses are known to mutate frequently, sometimes resulting in more severe or less severe symptoms and transmission characteristics. This current strain appears to have picked up the ability to spread more easily and cause more severe respiratory symptoms in those above age 60.

Currently it is very difficult for me to ascertain the truth regarding its severity, as statistics are very easy to “spin” to suit the narrative that a media outlet or governmental agency would like to portray. Further complicating this issue is the fact that the majority of non fatal cases have likely not been tested, and so their numbers do not factor into the mortality rate calculation, resulting in an artificially elevated percentage.

As of today there are no antivirals available to the public that show activity against this virus. Our office does not have test kits either, though this should change in the next week or so. I do know that Lourdes is very close to establishing a mobile test unit for all those suspecting they may be infected with Coronavirus. Symptoms to look for include fever above 100.4 and cough with or without shortness of breath (which can sound a lot like influenza symptoms). If you have these symptoms please call our office, and know that we may direct you to a mobile testing facility.

I believe it is important to remember that the health of your immune system is THE major determinant in how you will handle infection should it come your way. Optimal sleep, nutrition, and vitamin D status are big players. If you are diabetic, the level of blood sugar control is a huge issue. If gluten (wheat, barley, or rye) is in your diet, your gut health is at risk, which sets up an inadequate response to any infection. Excessive alcohol consumption is also harmful to your immune system. You should be outdoors doing exercise or yard work whenever possible. Use laughter and play as medicine. Go buy a frisbee and throw it with a child or a friend. Walk your dog more often. For those above age 70, those with chronic lung disease, or those taking immune modulating medications (typically prescribed for autoimmune diseases) you should take extra precautions regarding travel and exposure to large crowds. Finally, it is well documented that prolonged high levels of stress are harmful to our health and especially our immune systems. Therefore excessive worrying about this viral outbreak is just bad for your health. Be intentional and mindful about your level of media use, as they will undoubtedly increase your stress level, which leads to a cascade of neurohormonal events that undermine optimal health.

I am committed to providing the best care I can, especially during this difficult time, and I hope that this passes quickly without any severe infections among my patient population. We will keep regular office hours, and I am available by phone or text 24/7. Please do not let the media blitz lead you to live in fear, and instead focus on optimizing your health. Focus on your relationships and continue to LIVE. I will update you via email as things will inevitably change as we respond to this pandemic.

Very truly yours,

Ed Lafleur, M.D.
