Stress Management with Chiropractic

With the holiday season upon us, it is so important to start keeping an eye on your stress levels now. Things tend to get really busy with holiday travel, planning, get togethers, preparing meals, shopping for gifts and everything else that comes with the holiday season. Be sure to schedule in time to take care of yourself with things like chiropractic care, exercise, and just plain ol’ rest and relaxation.

Stress management is an amazing benefit of regular chiropractic. Adjustments can:

⚪Up-regulate stress reducing hormones like serotonin and dopamine
⚪Down-regulate the stress inducing hormone cortisol

Why Should You Move Your Body Every Day?

The most obvious reason is to use our muscles! You have more than 600 muscles in your body that make up about 40% of your total body weight! By getting your body moving, you are strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination. Here are some other benefits of daily movement:

🧠 Brain Health: Walking 30-40 minutes a day three times per week can help “regrow” the structures of the brain linked to cognitive decline in older adults.
❤️ Heart Health: The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 min/ week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 min/week of vigorous aerobic activity for cardiovascular health.

Let’s talk about joint mobility and health!

Our joints need to move to stay healthy! But, if our joints move too much or too little, that can cause problems. That is why I love to combine adjustments with stabilizing exercises (check out my last post for more info on that)!

The adjustments free up the joint to move in the way it is supposed to, and the stabilizing exercises work to keep them that way. Patients who get regular adjustments and stay on top of their recommended exercises tend to feel better faster and need fewer adjustments to maintain a healthy spine.

Joint and Muscle Stability Means Less Injury!

Stability is so important, especially for those of us that live active lifestyles. If you’ve ever started a new workout routine and ended up with an injury, it could be because your muscles weren’t stabilized and ready to handle a specific movement or amount of weight. This can also happen outside of exercising.

This is why I feel it is so important to teach patients “functional exercises” that target a specific muscle or muscle group that is weak. Some of the most common exercises include:

⚪Glute Squeezes: activates the large glute muscles (gluteus maximus) to support pelvic alignment and reduce low back pain
⚪Shoulder Drops: activates mid-back muscles to support proper posture and reduce upper back, neck and shoulder discomfort and tension.
⚪Leg Lifts/Wall Angels: targets the side of the glutes (gluteus medius) to increase full activation of all glute muscles and support your low back, pelvis and legs during activities such as walking.

Optimizing health, elevating life

Dr. Jennifer Andrade is a Colorado native. From a young age she was always interested in helping people and was fascinated by the human body. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. During the last year of her undergraduate studies she was involved in a car accident with a friend. Following the accident, that friend sustained a concussion and suffered daily, debilitating headaches that nearly forced him to drop out of school. He sought treatment from acupuncturists, medical doctors, neurologists, physical therapists, and massage therapists and found no relief. Then he sought treatment with a Chiropractor and his headaches quickly disappeared and he was able to get his life back. After witnessing the amazing benefits of Chiropractic, she was convinced and decided to pursue a career as a Chiropractor.

Dr. Andrade graduated Magna Cum Laude from Parker University in Dallas, TX in August 2014. Her philosophy on health is “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Benjamin Franklin. She strives to educate her patients to take control of their health, so that they can continue doing what they love and to be a partner in their journey towards better health and wellness.
