Panic… Don’t Panic
3 Scientifically researched methods to help ease that panic! I’m a research nerd and neuroscience and energy are just two of the many tools in my toolbox for you! So to help stop the panic do these things first!

✳️ Deep belly breath! Why? It deactivates your flight, fight or flee response.

✳️ Use your 5 senses! See 5 things, touch 4 things, hear 3 things, smell 2 things and taste one. Why? This is a grounding technique. Panic takes away from your sense of ground.

✳️Write it down. Why? This get’s the idea of the panic out of your head so you can rethink it. Change your mind about it… change your brain’s reaction to it. This is about neuroplasticity.

Practice these! These tips can be habit forming and after a while you will begin to notice that you are responding to your environment and/or that panic differently. You are literally changing your brain! But you have to create the habit. Start today.

With Sparkle and Sweat!!!

**Behavior change concept- Adaptability
Understanding the Adaptability piece of the Behavior Change model can help you and who you're working with overcome obstacles to learning or making the actual change. There are two components to the Adaptability piece.

-Internal Adaptability- When thinking about this point ask yourself how do I feel about making this change? What does it mean to be making this change? Do you have the adequate knowledge and/or skill set to make this change? When I’ve asked those questions of my clients, the main emotion is fear. Will they be able to make the change and what happens if they fall flat. Of course there are others and if we can how we and others adapt to new things the process has the ability to flow smoother.
-External Variables in Adaptability- This speaks to so many things. Do we have the “things” in order to make the new behavior change work or happen, i.e. screwdriver, software, or pencil. Do we have the right environment for the change to be effective? Additionally, do we need a coach or mentor to help us or the person along with the process. Are there classes, books, new SOPs that need to be used.

Sometimes, this part of the process seems simple and I think we forget to give it space and breath. What’s the old adage, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach the man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Well, in that teaching process, you know you are going to give him or yourself the right rod and reel specifically for the body of water as well as coach him throughout the process to see what is working well. The Behavior Change model just breaks down how to teach him or her to fish. :)

Your homework- Do a deep dive. How has this part of the Behavior Change model played out for you or someone you have worked with. You got this!

With Sparkle and Sweat!!!

**Behavior change concept- Motivation
Understanding your own motivations and those of the others you’re trying to help with a behavior change is important. Motivation is comprised of internal and external drives. Word of caution, focusing merely on the external motivations might not be enough to cross the behavior change finish line.

-External motivations speaks to the “things” outside of us that inspire the change. Examples could be but not limited to a pay bump, extra time, a vacation, new opportunities. These are different from person to person and dependent upon what the change is related to.
-Internal motivations are about how this new behavior will make you or the other person feel as well as the value the change will satisfy. For example, I will feel competent and my self-esteem has improved. I feel like a stronger leader and my relationships are improving.

Your homework- What are your internal and external motivations for a current or previous behavior change? Do a deep dive. You got this!

If you are learning about behavior change because you are trying to get someone else to embrace the change, you may have to ask the person about what will motivate them. It’s ok to ask.

Automatic Negative Thoughts!  We all have them.  Did you know it’s part of the human existence to have them and you get to choose what you want to do with them.  Sometimes those negative thoughts are trying to tell us something and sometimes those are just causing us worry.  Don’t get stuck in the negative thought.  Notice that it can be temporary and don’t let that negative thought define your existence.
