Try something new Thursday. Let’s face it, we all need a sweet treat here and there. These are a great way to get the sweet cravings satisfied while staying on a healthy track. Remember portions are important. Always try to include a protein with nuts, or Greek yogurt to get keep you feeling full. Also… ENJOY your treat.

Lunchables and uncrustables are such a popular lunch item, because…
➡️School mornings are so busy that the last thing you want to do is make lunch
➡️It needs to be something easy to make and to eat
➡️The kids like them.

I get it!

But here are reasons, why I’ve made the swaps that I have.

1️⃣Peanut butter
Many peanut butters are made with hydrogenated oils and added sugar. Hydrogenated oils may contain trans fats. Trans fats lead to high inflammation markers like CRP (C-reactive protein). Inflammatory CRP levels were 73% higher in women who consumed trans fats, according to a study. 1

2️⃣Jam
Many jams contains high fructose corn syrup. Princeton University found that HFCS leads to “abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides.” High concentrations of triglycerides in the blood indicate an elevated risk of stroke. 2

3️⃣Bread
Bread that has been made with wheat flour could have glyphosate. Glyphosate has been shown to increase the risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma and it has shown to affect the gut microbiome in animals. 3

4️⃣Crackers
Crackers with sprouted grains are a great option. The sprouting process breaks down the phytic acid found in wheat. Phytic acid decreases the absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body. So when you sprout the grains this allows folate, iron, vitamin C, B vitamins, zinc and magnesium to be absorbed better by the body. 4

Picky Eating Tip: Be a role model.

One of the most effective strategies, when dealing with picky eaters, is simply just eating food in front of them. There's no need for the big overdramatic yums, but just eat the foods you hope your child will eat in front of them. Model that eating salad with dinner is no big deal.

This also works well when there are foods you don't like. Instead of refusing to have any on your plate, model serving yourself some (just a taste). If you're comfortable, maybe try it. You can just say "I am still learning to like this food" instead of yuck or this is gross. Model how you would like your child to behave when they are served a food they don't like.
