A Guide to Senior Health: Challenges and Solutions

Did you know? Seniors account for 12% of the world’s population – and statistics show that the number will increase to over 22% by 2050.

With this increasing number, it is important to understand the challenges that people face as they age. More importantly, it is important to recognize that there are preventive measures that can help you (or a loved one) achieve healthy aging.

UR FIRST Home Health, a reputable provider of home health services in Las Vegas, Nevada, lists down some common problems that seniors face during their golden years. We also offer solutions to set you on a path to healthy aging:

Chronic Health Issues
According to the National Council on Aging, around 80% of seniors have at least one chronic health issue, and 77% have at least two. Diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer are among the most common health conditions affecting older adults.

As a concerned home health agency in Nevada, we recommend meeting with a physician for an annual checkup. We also recommend regular exercise and maintaining your healthy diet to help prevent or manage chronic health issues.

Falls and Physical Injuries
Every 11 seconds, a senior is taken to the emergency room for a fall. Further statistics show that one out of five senior persons gets a serious injury because of falls. This makes falls the primary cause of injury among the elderly. Because aging causes muscles to lose flexibility and strength and bones to shrink, seniors are more susceptible to losing their balance, fracturing a bone, and other physical injuries.

However, falls are not inevitable. They can be prevented through home modifications and proper fall education. Moreover, our physical therapy service can help improve a senior’s balance, flexibility, and muscle strength, therefore reducing their fall risk.

Mental Health
Did you know? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 15% of seniors over 60 years old suffer from a mental disorder. Among seniors, the most common mental disorder is depression – it occurs in 7% of the elderly population.

Senior depression can be caused by several factors, such as social isolation, major life changes, and dealing with a serious illness. For seniors who are feeling isolated and lonely at home, and are dealing with a chronic health issue, we can help. As a home health provider, we offer companionship and a range of other health services that can help you stay healthy.

Malnutrition
Malnutrition among seniors over 65 years old is often underdiagnosed. It can lead to other elderly health issues, such as muscle weakness and a weakened immune system. Malnutrition can be caused by depression, dietary restrictions, limited income, and other health problems (i.e. seniors with dementia may forget to eat).

As a trusted provider of skilled nursing in Nevada, we have nurses and home health aides who can help with dietary education, as well as meal planning and preparation. Furthermore, we also offer nutritional services to address nutrition issues among the elderly.

Choosing a Geriatric Care Manager

A geriatric care manager is a professional—often a nurse or social worker—who is trained to assess and plan for the care needed by an elderly. They help identify areas of concern and collaborate with the patient, their family, and their care provider. Here is a list of things to consider when hiring a geriatric care manager:

1. License and certification from legal organizations

2. Compatibility with every member of the family

3. Fluency in the language your family speaks

4. Emotional intelligence

It is highly nutritious because it contains a lot of calcium, protein, probiotics, iodine, and vitamins. Below are more benefits you can get from Greek yogurt:

1. Aids in weight loss and boosts metabolism

2. Improves digestive health and prevents irritable bowel movements

The Growing Demand for Home Care

"The demand for home care workers—also known as the “direct care” workforce—is expected to increase dramatically in coming years. Government statisticians rank home care as one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations, with an additional million workers needed by 2026; that’s an increase of 50% from 2014. And the number of Americans age 85 and older is projected to more than double in the next few decades, soaring from 1.8% of the population in 2010 to 4.5% in 2050."

Health Tip of the Day

Downsize your meat portion.

Is meat good or bad for you? While the debate rages on, steak lovers can indulge with less guilt simply by eating a more reasonable helping. The perfect meat portion is three ounces (about the size of a deck of cards), which is A LOT smaller than many restaurant portions.

It means you can still have meat but in a healthy and downsized helping.

Top Benefits of Speech Therapy for the Elderly (Part 2)

Like all senior home care, speech therapy plays a significant role in helping instill a sense of independence in older adults. The inability to communicate effectively dramatically hinders going about the activities of daily living, from answering the phone to handling finances. Regaining speech often provides a life-altering independence boost, empowering seniors to live fuller days.

Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy

The main difference between occupational therapy and physical therapy is that the former focuses on improving a client’s ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) while the latter focuses on improving a client’s ability to perform movements.

An occupational therapist treats the whole person whether they’re recovering from injuries or have developmental or cognitive disabilities affecting their motor skills, emotions, or behavior. On the other hand, physical therapists try to improve the impairment itself by increasing mobility, aligning bones and joints, or lessening the pain.

Top Benefits of Speech Therapy for the Elderly (Part 1)

Speech therapy for the elderly can help with speech issues due to the natural aging process. As one grows older, vocal cords can become less elastic and larynx muscles can weaken, making it difficult to talk in a manner they are accustomed to. Speech therapy for seniors can help them re-learn how to speak, using vocal exercises to help them communicate effectively once again.

How to Correctly Wear Surgical Masks

Why do surgical masks come in two colors? The colors have different purposes. These are:

a To protect others from your illness
Attach the white side to you and let the colored side face outward. In cases such as flu, it will filter the micro-organism and prevent it from being spread to others.

b. To protect yourself from the environment
The white side should face outward. It will protect you from the environment and prevent micro-organisms to get in contact with you.

Health Reminder Number 5: Be Positive

Based on the law of attraction, whatever we focus on will also be what we attract. If we focus our energy into thinking about positive thoughts, it can bring about positivity in our lives. If we become more positive then it can lead to better health. Why is that so? Research says that optimism can help us reduce stress, improve our immune system, increase our lifespan, etc. At UR First Home Health, we’ll make sure that you remain positive, relaxed, and safe in the comfort of your own home as we provide care for you.

The Intravenous Method

Medications can be administered in a variety of methods. One of them is to administer it intravenously. This means that medication is administered directly into your bloodstream using a tube or needle.

When our nurses administer your medications intravenously, this allows them to give you multiple doses of the medication you need without inserting a needle every time you require another dose of medication.

At UR First Home Health, our skilled nurses are equipped to administer your medications intravenously in the comfort of your own home.
