Happiest birthday to this QUEEN! Clinical program director, founder, boss lady, and dreamer of Serenity Birth Center. April has served this community for 20 years and created birth options for families in Nevada even beyond her reach. Her mission to make this birth center a reality has involved an immense amount of energy in every layer possible, but never once did that stop her. She has the most infectious smile, welcoming and loving personality, undeniable sense of community and dedication to this work. Sometimes there are just extra special people in this world, who create magic in everything they do, and we cannot express how grateful we are you were born. Please take a moment to wish her the happiest birthday and share a little on how April may have impacted you 💗

Baby’s got to eat when baby’s got to eat!

Did you know you can legally breastfeed anywhere in the US that you can be legally. Restaurants, stores, church, the park. That’s right, anywhere! Without a cover. It is unlawful to ask a nursing mother to go somewhere else, cover her baby, cover her breasts or stop.

The same goes in the workplace. Employers are required by law to provide a space for you to either nurse or pump. This space cannot be a bathroom or a closet either (yes, we have heard horror stories of moms pumping in the bathroom). And lastly, a fridge must also be available to store pumped milk.

Love this shot of @irina_alwayshappy nursing after his baptism.

We chose a different route this birth and I’m so thankful for that. I’ve never received such personalized care or been so trusted by my provider that I knew my body best. My children were able to be involved in every single baby checkup, the birth and the postpartum care. It all felt so much more natural and right. I felt heard, always.

So cheers to always following your momma instincts and choosing the best care for you and your baby! And cheers to my midwives who we so appreciate 💕

Let’s talk about breastfeeding and vitamin D🌞

🌞Vitamin D is crucial for our immune system
🌞it helps build and maintain strong bones
🌞Helps maintain a balanced mood
🌞Most of us are deficient
🌞Roughly one quart of human breast milk contains 50 IU of vitamin D, which is not a sufficient amount

Good news➡️we can get free sources of vitamin D daily. Finding time to get daily sunshine, nursing in a sunny window are all easy ways to get more in! This likely isn’t enough according to studies though, so supplementation is recommended. Some pediatricians recommend giving vitamin D drops to breastfed babies. But did you know, according to Dr. Bruce Hollis, you can increase your supplementation to 6400 IUs daily while breastfeeding to ensure baby is getting what they need.

Working together on drills for hemorrhage and shoulder dystocia 🩸 💪🏻 .

Practicing these skills regularly, outside of real deliveries helps us communicate effectively, allow everyone to feel familiar with protocols and refresh our skills. Repetition is so important for consistency and thorough care. We’re so grateful to have the collective skills on this team, you’re sure wind up in good hands.

Happiest birthday to our house mama or known as our practice manager, Cheryl. Cheryl is quite literally the glue that holds us all together. An immense amount of credit is owed to Cheryl for the policies, procedures, accreditation and so much more in making the birth center functional. There is not a client that walks through our doors that she is unfamiliar with and is over the moon when it comes time to meet their babes. The appreciation we each have for this wonderful woman, who always has a smile on her face, is infinite. We are so grateful for you in this family.

#TranspositionOfTheGreatArteries
This is the term for when the pulmonary artery & aorta are transposed (reversed) thus preventing the blood from oxygenating properly. It’s a life threatening condition that until recently was terminal for those who were born with it (In the 60’s less than 20% of babies with CHD survived, now it’s more than 90%). @sunrisechildrenshospitallv has a 100% survival rate for babies undergoing the surgery required to fix this condition!

🫀 F A C T S
- 1 in 100 babies are born with a congenital heart defect #CHD
- Less than 50% of CHDs are detected before the child exhibits symptoms of distress & less than 1/3 of cases are detected in utero
- A newborn heart is the size of a walnut!
- There are 40+ types of heart defects & they kill more children than ANY other defects or illnesses COMBINED
- CHD is the most common & lethal defect throughout the world
- Baby hearts form by the 28th day of pregnancy (5 weeks gestation), usually before most people know they’re pregnant
- There is no known cause or preventative measures for CHDs

** Nothing we did, not genetics, no medication I took, nor hyperemesis gravidarum caused this to happen. His heart just formed that way **

@zaya_519 & I are beyond grateful our son’s condition was caught due to the timely & responsive action of our midwife @newmoonmidwifery @serenitybirthlv & we’re fortunate to have had access to the amazing cardiologists & surgical team at Children’s Heart Center of NV.

Which is why…. We’re overjoyed & proud to announce that @chc_nevada reached out to @serenitybirthlv (without any prompting from us) to offer FREE echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds) to ALL of Serenity’s pregnant clients regardless of insurance or income!! 🎉🙌🏽👏🏽 Statistically this will save the lives of 5-10 babies each year!

Alejandro means defender of mankind & he’s already helping babies w/ CHDs get the best start possible! The impact 1 person can have on the world is amazing. #ProudMomOfAHeartWarrior

This is AMAZING for our community!! We often have mamas with extra milk who want to help other mamas in need. Sometimes the breastfeeding journey has hiccups you aren’t planning for and donor milk is an invaluable tool to help families achieve their goals and also provide for their babe.

If you are in need or interested in donating, please follow Heart & Sol Collective for more information💗

Let's talk about co-sleeping...

Did you just gasp? While this may be your initial reaction, there is so much misinformation out there. So we want to chat about SAFE bed sharing practices. There is immense research available sharing the benefits of bed sharing, some of which supports the breastfeeding relationship and also reduces risks associated with SIDS.

Countries like Japan and China have a lower rate of SIDS while simultaneously having a higher bed sharing rate.

Removing the hazardous circumstances and learning safe guidelines is how we can make safe choices for our families. Learn the risks about sleeping together on a sofa, after drinking alcohol and smoking. Minimize the use of pillows and blankets near your baby's face. And educating our support people on the safe practices to further spread awareness.

Through research, we have learned that 60-75% of breastfeeding mother's are co sleeping, even if their intention originally was not to.

Have you chosen to co-sleep? If so, what benefits have you found it brought to your family?

If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power

This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It was very important to me that the cover art conveyed the sentiment of my journey over the past few months. The dichotomy of the Madonna and the W***e. The idea that me as a sexual being and my body as a vessel and gift to my child are two concepts that can co-exist peacefully and powerfully. My body has belonged to the world in many different ways the past few years, and this image is my means of reclaiming my autonomy and establishing my pride and strength as a life force for my human being.

This cover image celebrates pregnant and postpartum bodies as something beautiful, to be admired. We have a long way to go with eradicating the social stigma around bodies & breastfeeding. I hope this can be a step in the right direction!

My fourth album, out August 27, 2021

I had a conversation(yesterday) with a young woman, pregnant, who was discussing things others have said about birth to her. She compared what she had been told by women who experienced induced labors to women who have home births. The statements were among the lines of, “it was horrible, so painful,” versus the calm and stillness you see of home birth. It was confusing that the two didn’t match.

You see, when we allow our bodies to move forward with labor as they wish, without pushing them with synthetic hormones, a magical cocktail of hormones takes better care of us. Our oxytocin crosses into our brain, labor is intense but momentary. We are allowed breaks, moments of pause, our bodies will “labor down” at times. Birth is looked back as a magical experience, hard but doable, worth it.

Do not fear something you were made for. Fear, instead, disrupting the process.

(Of course, there are times when interventions are medically necessary, lifesaving. I am speaking on the topic of unnecessary interventions)

I bought this birthing pool in a box last year for the birth of my baby. Used it once with a liner. It's been cleaned out and comes with the bag. Asking 170 . It worked great! If you need one please message me. I dont want to ship it due to how heavy it is. 💜
EXCITING!!
Thank you so much Serenity Birth Center and Jennifer for trusting me in your birth space for this beautiful home birth. This mama was so strong, her husband was such an amazing support, and watching April Clyde work with such competent and experienced, yet gentle hands was just incredible.
