My Magical Breast: Where No Breast Had Gone Before

" It can be devastating when someone highly motivated to exclusively breastfeed cannot.
Breastfeeding is a part of our sexuality, and when a woman discovers she can’t do what others seem to do so naturally, it is a genuine loss—like infertility—that deserves to be acknowledged and mourned.
In my private lactation practice, I sometimes sat and grieved with a mother who had to face this heartbreak."

My body is not like most. The internet tells me my odd deformity will not shorten my lifespan, but it makes me different. It affected my breastfeeding experience, but what was truly unexpected was the way breastfeeding affected my most peculiar body. Why should you care? And why should I reveal now

These pictures are so moving. I stared at each of them for awhile. Bittersweet, parenting 💗

Photo of Breast Milk Repelling Harmful Bacteria Goes Viral

I'm sorry I've been more MIA as the new year started up. I've been in my 4th quarter at my school and yesterday finally wrapped up everything with our graduation! The last week has been a whirlwind and I feel like I have more time left here than I actually do. I will be leaving El Paso and going home the 1st week of April.
After all the beautiful, hard, insane births, we're officially done with the program. My classmates and I went through a lot together and alone. I will not forget the incredible experiences... the wonderful new interns and giving preceptors we will have to part with, the amazing clients; women with a strength unlike anything I've ever witnessed, and a space that I've had so many emotions take over and leave me vulnerable in the best and worst ways. Now what will I do with this new hole in my heart that I know only this year here can fill?
Over the last 13 months, I was blessed to receive 32 babies into our world. (Is that for real?) I can never thank the mothers enough, these mamas that have helped me grow in a way that can be learned no other way. They have shared with me their love, grace, power, pain, hardships, and strength.
Now what will I do with this hole? ❤💔❤💔

A beautiful testimony of a mother learning herself

I grew up on the streets. We were dirt poor and after my dad went to prision, it got even worse. When we did live in a house, it was in the projects, and when we didn’t? We were homeless, eating out of dumpsters or sleeping in shelters.
And do you know what you never see in those places? On the streets? Or in DV shelters?
Women breastfeeding.
Then we got a new dad and all of that changed. He was our Papa until the day he got arrested for Pedophilia. Trust me, I know its heavy to hear and even easier to ignore —predators and children— but it’s my truth.
And do you know what I learned all those years? I learned that my body wasn’t really mine— its true purpose? To remain attractive for men. But wait, isn’t that what society teaches us too? This engrained generational belief- that women are here for the pleasure and servitude of man-so that the female body is then universally seen as purely sexual.
The remaining years of my childhood were spent in foster care. And you know what else you never see in foster homes?
Women breastfeeding.
I was the first, in my direct community, to change this. ‘Of course I’ll breastfeed,’ I’d think as I clicked on nursing covers in my registry, ‘but only because its whats best for my child.’ Then I had Lilly and all, of, that, changed.
Breastfeeding melted the shame I’ve carried with me simply because I was a girl. It gave me back the me I didn’t even realize I’d lost.
It was, the very first time I saw my body as my own.
See, what happened was that one day I had breasts and then the next day those very same breasts, produced milk.
The breasts I was taught were only for ‘him,’ now sustained ‘her’ life.
Revolutionarily.
Breastfeeding completely exploded the worlds pornographic view I carried of myself, and all women. Its like walking through life unable to smell but not knowing it, until you’re holding the most fragrant apricot colored rose.
And your mind explodes.
Everything changes.
Its because of that I don’t see a need to cover up.
Its because of that I have never been more proud to be a woman.
Its because of this, that I choose to normalize something that was not normal for me growing up. | @gypsynspice 📸 @ovlacekaj

"The placenta is a multifunctional organ, the only disposable one that...

...acts as baby's lungs to supply oxygen, kidneys to filter out waste, and as gastrointestinal and immune systems by delivering nutrients and antibodies."

A love letter from all us former placenta owners to this amazing organ. They took my placenta and all I got was this lousy belly button.

"A woman who held the universe in her womb"

This is you, and I know what you see. You see a soft middle, a round belly. You see too wide hips and your favourite jeans that don't do up. You see messy hair and tired eyes.
This is you, and here's what I see. A woman who held the universe in her womb, told by society she should be ashamed of it. I see strength and power to hold that growing and changing body and I see a new woman has recently emerged, a Mother. I see a woman who will not bounce back or go back to what she once was. She is so different now in so many much more beautiful ways.
This is you, and I know what your baby sees. Your baby sees perfection, ecstasy, joy, life, peace, love. Your baby sees home. Your baby sees you.

These are fantastic!!! 😂😂 Have a great night.

Parenting is not an easy task, those who have done it will know that's a fact. Despite our best intentions, it can sometimes go a little awry and minor mistakes can be made, with the poor little kiddies on the receiving end.

The Last Days of Pregnancy: A Place of In-Between - Mothering

Remember, the "due date" is an ESTIMATED Due Date and nothing more than that. Patience is one of the first lessons our children ever teach us and it all starts here :)

"The last days of pregnancy — sometimes stretching to agonizing weeks — are a distinct place, time, event, stage. It is a time of in between. Neither here nor there. Your old self and your new self, balanced on the edge of a pregnancy. One foot in your old world, one foot in a new world."

The last days of pregnancy are a distinct time of in between. It's a tricky time for mothers, and are a biologic and psychological event.

What Happens to a Woman's Brain When She Becomes a Mother

"...but for new mothers, some of the starkest differences are also the most intimate ones—the emotional changes. Which, it turns out, are also largely neurological.

Even before a woman gives birth, pregnancy tinkers with the very structure of her brain..."

From joy and attachment to anxiety and protectiveness, mothering behavior begins with biochemical reactions.

I am certified through DONA International, Catholic Doula, StillBirthday. Why Milk & Honey? When you think of milk and honey, there is feeling of warmth and coziness. It takes me back to childhood, when my grandmother would coddle me back to bed after a nightmare. My services include: -Prenatal appointments -Setting up/reviewing your Birth Plan -Reviewing Childbirth Education -Educating comfort measures to mother/birth partner -Preparing birth partner for baby -Assisting in beginning breastfeeding -Postpartum visit Many studies have shown that with a doula present for a mother's labor... -Labor is shorter -Less complications -Cesarean rates are reduced -Less need for Pitocin -Less chances of using forceps/vacuum suction -Cost of obstetrical care is reduced -Greater satisfaction for mother -Fewer cases of Postpartum Depression -Babies breastfeed easier -Babies have shorter hospital stays
