Between 1945 and 1973, roughly 1.5 million American women surrendered children for adoption most under enormous pressure, most sent away, most never told what they were signing. The law has changed since. Thirty-three states now require a waiting period before a mother can consent, and consent obtained through coercion isn't valid anywhere. Roughly 95% of private infant adoptions now involve some openness. But the reform was uneven and in most of the country, those original birth certificates are still sealed. If you got pregnant right now, would your relationship survive it? A 2022 study in Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health followed nearly six hundred women after seeking abortion care. At one week, 58% were still with the man involved. Five years later, 27% were. Fragile Families data from Princeton finds that roughly two-thirds of unmarried couples who had a child together are no longer romantically involved five years later. I went to Washington Square Park and asked women what they would want from a partner in that moment.
