Episode 24 😁

About the Guest:

Jonathan Mooney is a dyslexic writer, speaker, and do-gooder who did not learn to read until 12 years old. He faced several low expectations growing up—was told he would flip burgers, be a high school dropped out and end up in jail. Needless to say, there hopeful prophecies didn’t come to pass. Opposed to being a high school dropout Jonathan became a college graduate from Brown university with an honors degree in English lit; instead of flipping burgers he ended up writing books, the first of which he wrote at the end of the 23 as an undergrad; And instead of becoming an inmate he become an advocate creating organizations and initiatives that help people who get the short end of the stick.
👇👇👇

Jonathan has won many awards for all of this —The Harry S. Truman fellowship for public services, Finalist for a Roads Scholarship, LA Achievement award from The Lab school of Washington where I shared the stage with Vice President Joe Biden—and been featured in/on HBO, NPR, The New York Times, NBC, Fast company, and many other media outlets. But what he is most proud of is not that he proved some people who doubted him wrong—but that he proved the many people—his mom, a teacher named Mr. R, his wife Rebecca—right, not just about his potential but about the potential for all of us who live and learn differently.

Emotional Resilience.

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Dr. Seuss

Over the years, I've coached numerous individuals and noticed one element that has a huge impact on success; the element of Emotional Resilience. When it comes to coaching, individuals must have the emotional ability to snap back from a difficult situation that might occur in their life. We all have these tragic events that take place, and this causes an emotional upheaval for us, but how do you show the ability to snap back? A great example of a good “snap back” would be a rubber band. Imagine you are stretching a rubber band as far as you can, and then you let go. What happens? The rubber band snaps back on your hand, and you’ll hurt momentarily.
"A good school teaches you resilience - that ability to bounce back"
That is what Emotional Resilience is. How fast we can snap back from losing a job, a crisis within the family, or any other major event has a huge impact on our success. All the clients I have worked with notice that Emotional Resilience is like a muscle. You have to work it out. You have to develop it into something stronger than it was before. It's the same thing with Emotional Resilience; it's something that you have to work at and develop over time. As Albert Bandura once said,

"In order to succeed, people need a sense of self-efficacy, to struggle together with resilience to meet the inevitable obstacles and inequities of life."

My Story

Mathew L. Cox spent his elementary and middle school years thinking there was something wrong with his brain. For him, school work was a daunting, frustrating and often embarrassing challenge. He was the kid who never seemed to catch up with his classmates, no matter how hard he tried.

“Growing up with a disability was like having an elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about,” Cox explained.

Being diagnosed with a learning disability during his high school years helped Cox finally put a name to the problem, and to begin his journey to personal and academic success. “I’ve learned to befriend my elephant, I’ve named him George,” Cox said. “George is not going away but I can choose how I feel about him. We need to take the “dis” out of disability and embrace our elephant for who he (or she) is!”

Cox developed strategies that helped him graduate from high school, obtain a B.A. in Mass Communications and reach a Master’s Degree in Management and Public Administration. “My disability helped me understand at a young age, that failure is just a part of life,” Cox said. “The point is learning what does and does not work for you, so that when you pick yourself up and try again: success is closer.”
