You are free to consume a normal diet. But if your stomach seems upset, you should try going for bland, low-fat food items like plain rice, toast, broiled chicken or yogurt. In case, your bowel movements aren't regular after surgery, then try avoiding constipation and straining. Also, drink plenty of water.

Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair
Ventral hernias are repaired on an elective basis to avoid internal organs getting stuck in the hernia. This can result in strangulation, or death of the internal organ. Every hernia is repaired with mesh when we use the laparoscope. This mesh is made of PTFE which is the material used in Gore-Tex™. The advantage of mesh is a more durable repair and less post-operative pain than the older type of hernia repair without mesh. Recurrence rates for a mesh repair are around 1% compared to around 10% with the older technique. This procedure is done under general anesthesia.

LUMPECTOMY
Breast conservation therapy (lumpectomy): This procedure removes a tumor from the breast. A lumpectomy differs from a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast. Women who undergo a lumpectomy are usually recommended to receive radiation therapy following surgery to help prevent recurrence. Some women are candidates for intraoperative radiation therapy, which typically limits the amount of radiation treatments needed after surgery. Commonly referred to as breast conservation therapy, a lumpectomy when coupled with radiation therapy is designed to allow a woman to keep her breast.

Core Breast Biopsy
The core breast biopsy helps doctors accurately diagnose breast abnormalities. It is performed in less than 1 hour, requires only a single ¼ inch incision, and requires no stitches. It is done in the office under local anesthesia.

This offers women an alternative to an open surgical biopsy, the most common biopsy method, which can leave scars and result in disfigurement of the breast. The procedure is performed using ultrasound guidance to allow greater accuracy in needle placement. Women are able to resume normal activity immediately following the procedure with only a small adhesive strip to cover the incision site. More detailed information can be found at www.sanarus.com

An umbilical hernia creates a soft swelling or bulge near the navel. In babies who have an umbilical hernia, the bulge may be visible only when they cry, cough or strain.

Umbilical hernias in children are usually painless. Umbilical hernias that appear during adulthood may cause abdominal discomfort.

For adults, talk with your doctor if you have a bulge near your navel. Seek emergency care if the bulge becomes painful or tender. Prompt diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications.

Why Is Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery Done
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is the best method of treating gallstones that cause symptoms, unless there is a reason that the surgery should not be done.

Laparoscopic surgery is used most commonly when no factors are present that may complicate the surgery.

How Well It Works
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is safe and effective. Surgery gets rid of gallstones located in the gallbladder. It does not remove stones in the common bile duct. Gallstones can form in the common bile duct years after the gallbladder is removed, although this is rare.

Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery for Gallstones
Surgery Overview
Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) removes the gallbladder and gallstones through several small cuts (incisions) in the abdomen. The surgeon inflates your abdomen with air or carbon dioxide in order to see clearly.

The surgeon inserts a lighted scope attached to a video camera (laparoscope) into one incision near the belly button. The surgeon then uses a video monitor as a guide while inserting surgical instruments into the other incisions to remove your gallbladder.

Before the surgeon removes the gallbladder, you may have a special X-ray procedure called intraoperative cholangiography, which shows the anatomy of the bile ducts.

You will need general anesthesia for this surgery, which usually lasts 2 hours or less.

After surgery, bile flows from the liver (where it is made) through the common bile duct and into the small intestine. Because the gallbladder has been removed, the body can no longer store bile between meals. In most people, this has little or no effect on digestion.

In 5 to 10 out of 100 laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries in the United States, the surgeon needs to switch to an open surgical method that requires a larger incision.footnote1 Examples of problems that can require open rather than laparoscopic surgery include unexpected inflammation, scar tissue, injury, and bleeding.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Removal of the gallbladder is a very common procedure as about 600,000 gallbladders are removed in the United States every year! The gallbladder is responsible for storage of a small amount of bile for use after a fatty meal. However, when the gallbladder gets stones that have formed, it will often get symptoms of pain and bloating. These are signs that more serious complications such as infection and bile duct blockage may also occur. The vast majority of gallbladders are removed with the laparoscope.
