The amazing patients and docs at the Women’s Cancer Center. Over 12 years ago Micaela Bravo presented with advanced stage ovarian cancer and underwent a massive surgical procedure followed by chemotherapy....and more surgery and more chemotherapy and held her head high, smiled, took a beating and kept on ticking with a heart of gold. I was her first doc at the WCC and as time passed she and we were lucky enough to find an incredibly bright and caring new doc, my partner, Dr.Natalie Gould. So as this old man, who was lucky enough to have Natalie, Dr.Kushnir and Dr Fleury join the gyn onc team, transitioned my patients to the new kids on the block, Micaela joined with Dr. Gould in her continued fight for survival. Just when all seemed to have gone in her favor, she was found to have esophageal cancer. At this point, most would have bowed gracefully and exited right, but instead more radiation and more chemotherapy and today I was privileged to pay a surprise visit to Micaela while she was in for follow-up and by God there she was laughing and crying, but standing there without any evidence of disease. What a day!!
Thanks Natalie and thanks Micaela, it’s your story that makes it all worthwhile.
Love ya

Over the weekend the WCC lost a member of our family when Lee Gordon, husband of Dr. Natalie Gould and father of Olivia, passed peacefully into the night. Lee had been courageously fighting thyroid cancer. Lee continued to live a full life socially and professionally until the end was very near. He played golf, rode his beloved bikes and drove a bevy of cars...most importantly he loved his family, friends and his job. It takes most families when moving to Las Vegas, a bit of time to come to love our unique community, but the Gould Gordons embraced this city (particularly Lee) and became a part of the community on so many levels. Lee was an amazing talent in the OR with incredible judgement. I can’t tell you how many surgeons Lee kept out of trouble. He became a trusted part of many surgical teams. He rode bikes with many; traveled with some; rooted like crazy for our Knights; and was so proud of Natalie (his little General) and Olivia. He tried to keep some of that on the down low but when Olivia “kicked ass” as a diver on the state or national level he was so so excited for her and proud that she had stuck with it. Even with his “cancer” Lee was too young and too active for me to keep up with but I enjoyed watching from afar. Regardless of which belief system you may be part of ( or not) say a prayer for or think of something nice or funny about Lee. I am sure he would like that. He will be missed and always loved by those closest to him. Personally I will become a closet Oklahoma football fan in his memory.
RIP Lee Gordon.

At the Gynecologic Oncology Conference at the Women's Hospital in Beijing. Posted on my personal page news about Dr Nam, Mr. Miller, and my sister Mary Spirtos.
As they say "cancer sucks" and our government spends money and resources fighting wars we can't win and ignores this one,
Please go to our web site and contribute as we try to finance a genomics program in Nevada. Private funding is likely to be the only way to make headway.

The Apothecary Shoppe opened today at 4240 W. Flamingo. Medicinal marijuana will now be readily available to our patients.

Soon the Apothecary Shoppe will open double-blinded randomized controlled study comparing our unique THC/CBD syrup versus conventional liquid Zofran in an attempt to determine if the THC/CBD product is superior in controlling nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy for a malignant condition. It is about time we are able to answer these questions of clinical importance. We need to accrue approximately 150 patients to meet the study design.
So tired of rumor and gossip leading medical research in this area...::"times are a changing "

The WCC team ( pictured Drs. Gould, Kushnir, and Fleury) with Dr. Vicki Mazzorana being recognized by the UNLV School of Medicine (1st class 2017) for supporting a 4 year scholarship for an incoming student. All 60 first year students will be funded throughout their 4 year curriculum. Great job by the Board of Regents and Dean Atkinson!!
Drs. Hsieh and Browder were unable to make it as they were working to support such efforts.

Social media is an interesting phenomenon....in some ways providing invaluable information and in others deeply disturbing. At the WCC we are constantly trying to advance our specialties; improve survivals associated with horrific cancers; while paying attention to the quality of life issues at the heart of virtually every medical decision one makes.
We have made a commitment to educating medical students and residents in training while conducting more clinical trials in the Nevada than any other group. There is a drum beat in our State that this type of organization is only available in other states - this is non sense. Members of our group serve on major committees in the NCI's cooperative research group (NRG) involving specialists in gyn oncology; colorectal surgery; breast cancer; and radiation therapy. Virtually every major trial in our sub-specialties are as available here in Nevada. In fact, neither UCLA or USC is a full-member institution in the NRG. Often patients with devastating diseases end up thinking there has to be something else out there, that isn't available in Las Vegas, Nevada when the answer is in their back yard.
Our mission from the first day was to provide first class care with the best physicians right here.
Social media doesn't always accurately portray this. Out of thousands of patients cared for over the years, social media provides a platform used, for the most part, by the few dissatisfied patients, who bemoan sometimes long waits in an office but forget to mention we squeezed them in when their referring physician called the day prior...so instead of waiting 2 weeks for an appointment they waited 2 hours. Patients forget that cancer is unpredictable and the patient scheduled for a routine visit can be found to have recurrent cancer and in order to stay on time the physician would need to tell that patient to "reschedule" so as not to be late.
Our group of physicians are dedicated to individual patient care and that means we are not going to practice "by the clock". We are not a Kaiser-like practice. We take all comers; our Foundation provides help for many without insurance; we provide every patient with our personal cell phone with no "concierge charge"; and perhaps we may just not be the group for every patient. If you want the 15 minute and out visit regardless of your condition there are many practices that will provide that experience....we just haven't gotten to that point yet and personally I hope, as Medical Director, that we never do.
ps sometimes our staff is "curt" on the phone but remember we still have people, not machines, answering the phones. It is hard for a machine which provides 10 options, none of which fit your situation, to be called "curt". I personally have a much different description for those apparatuses and prefer the human to human interaction, however flawed that may be.
Sincerely yours and on behalf of the staff at the WCC of Nevada,

Nick M. Spirtos, M.D.

We have a great crew!! I want to thank everyone for giving up family time to be at the health fair. Our participating in community events like this might be the difference in 1 person being appropriately screened ... and that is the nature of what we do, one patient at a time. Making a difference.
