It's Official!!! SMARTdrill 6.0 is FDA listed and now available for sale in the US!
SMARTdrill 6.0 Provides Real-time Drilling Data and Drill-bit Location, Reduces Healthcare Waste, and Heightens Patient and Surgeon Safety
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The SMARTdrill 6.0 has been listed with the FDA and is now available in the United States for some of the most common orthopedic surgical procedures. Smart Medical Devices, Inc. (SMD), will introduce the SMARTdrill 6.0 in the coming weeks.
“I watched surgeons struggle every day with conventional drilling technology. Our discussions and many years of hard work led to the creation of the SMARTdrill”, said Wayne Anderson, MD, MBA, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Medical Devices.
“As an orthopedic surgeon, I agree that we have a problem with our most basic skill-set of drilling bone and placing screws”, said Mike Karch, MD, FAAOS, co-founder of the Smart Medical Devices, Inc., Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and Chair of the Mammoth Orthopedic Institute. “The SMARTdrill’s innovative technology addresses this problem by providing the surgeon with real- time drilling data to inform their clinical decisions and choice of implant hardware”.
The SMARTdrill 6.0 is on the forefront of osteoscopy, or radiation-free continuous drill bit localization which minimizes the use of x-ray.
“I am all too familiar with the challenges and inefficiencies in the operating room due to using 50-year old technology. The SMARTdrill will improve the typical workflow by reducing the number of steps used to place surgical hardware”, said John (Jack) Perry, MD, FAAOS, co- founder of Smart Medical Devices, Inc., and practicing surgeon in Melbourne, Florida.
This technology may be helpful to healthcare systems and insurance companies that are seeking to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes.
SMARTdrill 6.0 will be featured at the 2019 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting Innovation Theater on March 13, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and at AAOS 2019 Annual Meeting - Booth #4421 (Smart Medical Devices, Inc.).
ABOUT SMARTdrill 6.0 System
The SMARTdrill 6.0 is a surgical drill that curtails dangerous drill and screw plunge, and accurately measures depth, torque, and energy in real-time. This cutting-edge patented technology was developed to address the limitations of current equipment and improve patient outcomes for the most common orthopedic surgical procedures. The Graphical Use Interface, or GUI, provides convenient visual confirmation of drill performance and location that will help
the surgeon optimize drill depth, screw selection and insertion, and choice of implant hardware. The SMARTdrill 6.0 system* and SMARTbitÔ drill bits are now available in the United States.

SMARTdrill® presented in San Fran!

The Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society hosted their 27Th annual scientific meeting in San Francisco. The meeting marked the second podium presentation in the world on SMD’s revolutionary Vtorq® drilling technology in one week. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (“TSRHC”)’s Alexander Cherkashin, MD presented research study with the SMARTdrill: “Comparative Performance of Conventional drills and Drills with Controlled Advancement and Real Time Feedback”. TSRHC research team compared the drill bit plunge depth of experienced surgeons, orthopedic residents, and novices and found a significant reduction in drill bit plunge when drilling the accepted synthetic human bone analog by SawBonestm.

Dr. Cherkashin concluded: “The dual motor drill significantly decreased plunge depth for both surgically experienced and inexperienced subjects. While inexperienced subjects performed worse with the conventional drill than those with experience, there was no difference in their performance with the dual motor drill. Further studies are needed to determine the clinical significance of this finding and to investigate other clinical applications of the dual motor drill.”

SMARTdrill goes to Dublin!

The World Conference of Biomechanics marks the first Podium presentation in the world on SMD’s revolutionary drilling technology. Florida Institutes Technology’s (FIT) Scott Baskerville, Masters candidate in biomedical engineering presented his research with SMARTdrill®, “Evaluation of the Effects of Modified Orthopedic Drill Bits on Pilot Hole Drilling Energy, Orthopedic Screw Insertion Energy, and Orthopedic Screw Axial Pullout Strength” Some of his most powerful conclusions noted that for the drill bits tested there was significant correlation found between drilling energy and the density of the artificial homogenous bone blocks by SawbonesTM. Sawbones is the industry standard as an accepted synthetic test analog for human bone. His presentation also reported the ability to effectively predict the holding strength of orthopedic implants with SMARTdrill’s technology. He proposed many future studies with the SMARTdrill and suggested real world applications with a density measurement tool like SMARTdrill, safety and cost may be improved.

Surgeons want better, SMARTer tools

2018 AAOS Annual Meeting Report

The America Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting - “the world’s largest meeting of orthopaedic surgeons, researchers and allied health professionals” – took place March 5-10 at the New Orleans Convention Center. The Meeting is where industry and healthcare providers meet to improve patient care.

The core mission of this impressive meeting is to provide continuing medical education to surgeons with exposures to new technology. SMD leadership strongly believes that education is the best way to change practices and when a better option for providing safer, smarter surgery is presented to surgeons they will adopt it to best serve their patients. SMD is a data driven company about improving lives for patients and healthcare providers.

12,900 attendees enjoyed what New Orleans had to offer. 354 attendees passed through the SMD SMARTlab. Forty surgeons completed our survey. 82% of those that completed the survey wished to be contacted by SMD when SMARTdrill comes to market which is very promising for early surgeon adoption of SMD technology. For three years SMD has polled surgeons at the annual AAOS meeting. From these 22 questions SMD's Clinical Advisory Board (CAB) has validated the need for SMD technology in surgery. From the polls it’s clear surgeons want safer, smarter tools that provide data, or actionable intelligence affording them better choices for their patients.

Our 2018 AAOS surgeon survey revealed that surgeons aren’t given basic performance of the drill bits they use and lack industry support in objectively quantifying intraoperative drilling performance. Not knowing drill bit performance could lead to injury with high drilling temperatures to the bone and plunge events from dull, clogged, or poorly performing drill bits. Over 90 % of Surgeons polled would like to know the bone density and pullout strength of bone anchors. Possibly why 82% wished to be contacted when SMARTdrill comes to market.

Specifically, our survey revealed:
1. 83% thought that some nonmedical drill bits perform better than orthopedic
production drill bits
2. Only 18% thought that manufacturers provided them with performance data
on their drill bits
3. Only 18% thought that manufacturers could tell them when their drill bits
are performing within specifications
4. 93% of surgeons would like to know real time bone density during drilling
5. 90% of surgeons if available, would use an intra-operative test to ensure the
drill bit falls within manufacturers specification.
6. 88% of surgeons would like to know real time drill bit performance data
during surgery
7. 97% would like to know the real time pullout strength of soft tissue anchors during surgery.

SMARTdrill co-inventors Dr. Wayne Anderson and Dr. Jack Perry demonstrated SMARTdrill to hundreds of surgeons to prove they can now operate with improved accuracy and safety. Thousands of holes drilled without a plunge. Even nurses that don’t normally drill holes in bone tried the SMARTdrill and didn’t plunge and seemed to easily interpret the Graphic user interface (GUI)(fig.1). Operating room personnel that visited SMARTlab liked the idea of using less radiation, less wasted time and implants while providing a higher level of safety for their patients.

The SMARTdrill provides the data that never before has been available. The SMARTdrill provides real time bone depth measurement, bone density, drill bit performance, screw pullout strength, total construct strength, and even prevents the plunge. The AAOS surgeons want performance data during surgery.

SMARTdrill is the tool that provides the data.
SMARTdrill is Data.
