Sharing something close to home. Brenda lost 85 pounds over two and a half years, and did everything right, except her body wouldn't let go of the loose skin left by three C-sections and a hysterectomy.

She found her answer on TikTok, of all places, watching women share their real recovery from surgery abroad. She ended up in Tijuana for a full mommy makeover, with care she says surprised her more than the surgery did, for about a third of the US price.

Brian wore glasses for most of his adult life and kept Googling LASIK prices, seeing $4,000 to $5,000, and deciding glasses were annoying but not that annoying.

Then his wife decided to get it done in Bangkok, and he figured why not do it together. They staggered their procedures by two days so they could take care of each other, which they joked about being the blind leading the blind. In Bangkok, LASIK was $1,732 each. They stayed at the Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt for under $125 a night.

Even paying full price for flights, hotels, and dinners, two LASIK procedures abroad cost less than one would have at home. Brian's one regret is not doing it years ago.

Cherry was on a student visa in the Bay Area and needed a deep cleaning and fillings, but without decent insurance she was looking at $1,500 to $2,000 out of pocket in San Francisco.

A former manager in Hong Kong had told her years earlier that people from all over Asia and the Middle East fly to Thailand for medical and dental care, so she booked appointments for herself and her mom and turned it into a nine-day family vacation in Phuket.

Deep cleaning and fillings for both of them came to about $200 to $300 combined. The rest of the trip was beaches, kayaking, and exploring caves with her parents. The entire vacation cost roughly what the dental work alone would have been at home.

Brenda spent two and a half years transforming her body. Ozempic, five days a week in the gym, all the way from 223 pounds down to 155. But three C-sections and a hysterectomy had left her with loose skin and scar tissue that no amount of working out was going to fix. She called it her "thing" and she wanted it gone.

After falling down a TikTok rabbit hole of women documenting their surgery journeys in Mexico, she connected with Hospital BC in Tijuana and got a full mommy makeover: 360 lipo, muscle repair, breast lift and reduction, and a BBL.

The full surgery was $13,500. In the US, the same scope of work was going to run her $35,000 to $40,000 or more. She documented the entire recovery on TikTok, graphic and all, because she wanted other women to see the real process, not just the before and after.

Cherry moved to New York with a partner, a new career, and a brownstone in Park Slope. Everything was falling into place until the relationship ended and the future she'd been planning disappeared.

At 39, she walked into a fertility clinic determined to give herself options. Her doctor told her that her egg reserve was lower than most women her age and recommended against extracting. She was devastated and spent a long time accepting she might not have her own biological child. But she only needed one good egg, and today her daughter Mia is nine months old.

Egg retrieval costs $15,000 to $20,000 per cycle in the US. Cherry wishes she'd known how much cheaper and more personal the experience is abroad.

"W" didn't go to Seoul for himself. He went because his mom and girlfriend both needed cosmetic eye procedures and he was the one willing to coordinate the whole trip.

In California they were looking at $6,000-$10,000 for one procedure and $15,000-$25,000 for the other. In Seoul, the combined cost was $7,200. While he was in the waiting room during their surgeries, he walked upstairs, found a dental clinic, and got a checkup and deep cleaning for $40.

For roughly the cost of one procedure at home, they got everything done, spent over a week in Seoul, and came back with change to spare. He's already planning his next trip!

"I've worn glasses since the third grade. Over 35 years. LASIK ads in the US quoted me $6,000-$10,000, and a YouTube video of the procedure scared me off for a decade. Then I learned that Bangkok offered a bladeless version for $1,700, both eyes. The private hospital experience was better than anything I've had in the States, and the whole three-week trip with my family cost about what the procedure alone would have cost at home."

"I was quoted $15,000-$20,000 for a hair transplant in the US, and I would have had to fly to New York on top of that. Instead I flew to Istanbul, got the procedure done for $3,050 with a luxury hotel and transportation included, and spent a week exploring the city while I recovered. My only regret is not bringing a book, because the 10-hour procedure was really boring."
