The “name the need” check-in

Sometimes identifying the need is more useful than analyzing the emotion for another hour.

A quiet sign you're struggling: everything becomes maybe later.

You will never feel 100% ready. Readiness is a myth that keeps us frozen. Action creates readiness, not the other way around.

If you are recovering from burnout, grief, illness, or a long period of isolation, waiting for a sudden surge of perfect confidence means waiting forever.

The trick is to reenter life gently, in micro-steps, while carrying your hesitation with you.

You know you're safe.
You know the conversation isn't dangerous.

Yet your heart races, you
freeze, shut down or want to escape.

Explain that understanding the reaction is different from judging it.

It takes a lot of courage to reset or start over after a big change. To go from the comfortable and known to the unknown can be very scary. Some examples of big changes that take a lot of courage to go through are:

1. A Divorce
2. A Career Change
3. Becoming an Empty Nester
4. Caregiving Changes
5. Recovery
6. Friendship Changes

Three questions OCD wants answered that may never have a perfect answer.

1. What if I made the wrong choice?

2. How do I know for sure?

3. What does this thought say about me?

Recovery isn't finding the perfect answer. It's learning you don't need one.

You don't need to earn rest by reaching exhaustion

Distinguishing between restorative rest and withdrawing from life (often referred to as behavioral avoidance or inertia) comes down to your energy outcome and emotional state after the pause.

Restorative Rest

Restorative rest is an intentional, active or passive practice that recharges your energy reserves, calms your nervous system, and returns you to a functional baseline.

• The Feel: You feel a sense of relief, quieted tension, mild rejuvenation, or gentle readiness to re-engage with your day.

• The Intent: It is bounded in time and purpose—such as taking a nap after a heavy week, stepping away from screens for sensory quiet, or doing a low-stakes hobby.

• The Outcome: You feel more capable, clear-headed, or stable afterward.

Withdrawing from Life (Avoidance)

Withdrawing from life happens when a temporary retreat crosses the line into isolation, escapism, or emotional numbing (such as prolonged "bed rotting" or inertia from burnout).

• The Feel: You feel trapped, heavy, guilty, ashamed, or persistently hopeless rather than refreshed.

• The Intent: It is driven by avoidance—hiding from anxiety, difficult responsibilities, or uncomfortable emotions.

• The Outcome: The low mood or lethargy deepens the longer you stay inactive, making it harder to get up or reconnect, even when you want to.

The hidden cost of always preparing for the worst.

You may feel safer—but you also spend today emotionally living through problems that haven't happened.

Try a Transition Ritual

Before going from work → Home

Caregiver → Personal time

Busy → Rest 5 minutes without your phone. Slow your breathing, take a short walk, change clothes, listen to music, or make tea.

Teach the nervous system that one part of the day has ended.
