Discrimination can take many different forms, and for a long time, one of them has been on hair. The Crown Act is a landmark piece of legislation aimed at protecting individuals from discrimination based on their hairstyles and hair textures, including natural hair.

The CROWN Act is already law in 12 states, led by California, which passed it in 2019. In Georgia, five communities - Clayton County, East Point, Gwinnett County, South Fulton and Stockbridge - have made it illegal to discriminate against African Americans based on wearing natural hairstyles.

Black hair has been a symbol of pride and resistance for generations of African Americans, and has been central to the ongoing struggle for racial equality. Historically, black hair has been criminalized and used as a tool of oppression, with African Americans being forced to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards in the workplace and in public spaces. The Crown Act sends a powerful message that these forms of discrimination will no longer be tolerated and that natural hair is a celebrated aspect of black identity.

By passing the Crown Act, Gwinnett county has taken an important step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all. Let’s continue to work together to make sure that everyone is free to wear their hair however they choose, without fear of discrimination. 💫
