100-year-old Ida Keeling set a new world record for the 100-meter dash at last weekend's 122nd Penn Relays in Philadelphia! The sprinter, who is just a few weeks away from her 101st birthday, ran against competitors aged 80 and up and finished the race in 1 minute, 17.33 seconds, a world record for her age group. After crossing the finish line, Keeling celebrated the moment by doing five push-ups on the infield to loud cheers from the 30,000 spectators. “It was wonderful,” Keeling told Runner’s World. “I’m very happy to offer all of this crowd a nice example of what you can do for yourself, and I thank God every day for my blessings.”
Keeling took up running late in life; her daughter and trainer Shelly Keeling encouraged her to start running at age 67 after a family tragedy. “Both my brothers had been murdered, so she was sinking very quickly,” Shelly remembers. “I just picked her up one morning and said, ‘you’re coming with me,’ and I bought her an extra pair of sneakers and the rest is history.” Since then, running has become one of Keeling’s great joys. “You see so many older people just sitting around -- well, that’s not me,” asserts Keeling, who says she learned resilience living through the Great Depression. As for the secrets to her long life, Keeling recommends, "Do what you have to do, not what you want to do. Eat for nutrition and not for taste. And exercise at least once a day." And, perhaps most importantly, the centenarian adds, "Love yourself."
