Pilates emphasizes core strength, stability and flexibility, as well as correct alignment of the pelvis and spine. Individuals learn to use the breath efficiently with movement, engage the deep core muscles, and execute exercises with control, focus, and precision. Students gain a greater sense of body awareness, balance, and increased range of motion. About the Instructor: Caitlin graduated from Point Park University with a BA in Dance in 2009 with concentrations in Ballet and Jazz. She is a BASI Pilates certified Mat instructor since 2011, and completed the BASI Comprehensive Teacher Training Course in the spring of 2014. Since completion of the course, she has been an apprentice instructor at Balanced Bodies in Herndon, VA. Caitlin is an instructor at the Loudoun School of Ballet in Leesburg, VA, and is Ballet Mistress for the Loudoun Ballet Company. Caitlin worked at Tompkins Physical Therapy for 3 years as a PT Tech, receptionist and group exercise instructor. She currently works as a PT Tech at Biomechanic Physical Therapy in Lansdowne, VA. One of the first questions I ask clients, is if they know what neutral spine/pelvis is. Neutral spine is important to know how to find, but so few people have been educated about what it is or how to find it.
Once you understand the concept, and what it should feel like on the floor and the wall, then you can apply those concepts to your everyday activities, so you'll be on your way to a healthy and happy spine!

Here is another great abdominal exercise that is PT inspired! It's an advanced version of the Dead Bug, which is normally done with the legs bent at 90 degrees in a table top position. Straightening the legs takes this exercise to another level!
(If you are unable to keep the pelvis stabilized, and your upper back connected to the ground, then stick with the legs at 90 until you are strong enough. Safety first!)

Since I moved to administration at Biomechanic Physical Therapy, I've been trying to be good about doing exercises for my upper back since we all know how terrible sitting in a chair is for us!
In a therapy setting, these positions are usually done with the forehead resting on a towel, and there is a rest in between positions. Here, Olivia is slightly lifted challenging the back extensors while working scapular stabilization, making this an extremely effective exercise for the upper/mid back!
